  • A Love Connection: WordPress as a Headless CMS

WordPress is a great publishing system that can do just about anything, but there are times when it doesn’t get the love it deserves. This talk will demonstrate how WordPress can be used as a headless, or de-coupled CMS, to become a true Content Management System where all content and images can be managed for places other than just a WordPress website. We will cover the WordPress REST API, publishing to WordPress using some HTML and javascript, using WordPress as a CMS for Adobe XD prototypes, and Gatsby, a static site generator. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 100State is a co-working space located at 316 W. • More Secure API Requests with WordPress Helper Functions

Making API requests with JavaScript is something web developers do every day. API services often require you to keep API keys out of the browser or route your requests through a server to secure the request. These requirements are meant to keep the API secure and not overloaded with hijacked requests. We will look at a workflow in WordPress that will route a request through the server and return the information to the browser without a page refresh. This workflow is particularly useful if you want or need to keep your API keys secret or out of the browser client, and make requests from a server and not the browser. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A little about the Speaker: Nate has been building websites for individuals, non-profits, embassies, and businesses since 2011. He loves web development because it’s the perfect mix of problem solving, building, and life-long learning. Nate is an avid learner and has made a habit of collecting masters degrees. He’s also been to six continents (not Antarctica yet!), lived on four, speaks Spanish, and is varying degrees of conversational in a couple other languages. Family, friends, food, coffee, and cooking are his favorite activities outside of work. He now lives in Wisconsin with his wonderful wife and daughter and is VP of Development at The Digital Ring. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A little about the Meetup sponsors: *Earthling Interactive* Since 1999 Earthling clients have used our services to build outstanding websites and applications in dozens of industries. • WordPress and HTTPS

    100 State

HTTPS is the future of the internet, providing security, getting that cozy “Secure” lock on your browser and enabling a speedy future with HTTP/2. Forcing HTTPS helps secure our content and gives our users confidence to use our products. WordPress has even added HTTPS support to the minimum requirements for web hosts. But what if your site is already on insecure HTTP? What if it contains hundreds of blog posts full of content and plugins importing content from outside sources? There’s a lot to consider including all the absolute URLs to images in your database, outside links to your site, your google analytics account, setting up page redirects and testing to make users aren’t seeing mixed content warnings. This session will cover lessons learned from forcing HTTPS on several WordPress websites. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A little about the Speaker Andrea Roenning is the Senior Web Developer and Designer at Forte in Madison, WI where she develops and manages several custom WordPress sites.
