  • Customize your 404 page

    Lugar por decidir

We will have a guest speaker, Michelle Frechette Ames, who will be sharing her wisdom with us. This will be an online meetup to allow more people to attend. We will post the link in the event description and in the comments on the day of the meetup. About the topic: Customize your 404 page Every site has a 404 page. Most of them are boring as…well…as watching paint dry. But it doesn’t have to be that way. A 404 page can feel like you walked into the closet instead of out the front door…it’s not where you intended to be, it feels embarrassing, and you’re not sure how to figure out where to go next. A well-designed 404 page feels like discovering an Easter egg. Crafting a good 404 page uses creativity, is fun to do, and creates a unique user experience for any site visitor who ends up there. This talk will provide examples of fun 404 pages, how to determine the best components for your site, and how to implement a 404 page easily. Attendees will leave with some great examples and action items to make every site a little more fun. If you have a specific question that you are hoping to cover during the meetup, please feel free to drop them in the comments and I'll make sure Michelle sees them. ********** Login info for tonight's meeting ********** Topic: WordPress Pittsburgh Meetup - 404 pages Time: Sep 12,[masked]:30 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) Join Zoom Meeting https://zoom.us/j/813652369 One tap mobile [masked],,[masked]# US (New York) [masked],,[masked]# US (San Jose) Dial by your location [masked] US (New York) [masked] US (San Jose) Meeting ID:[masked] Find your local number: https://zoom.us/u/aeCmNyqZfM

  • Getting Started with Email Marketing on your WordPress Website

    Code and Supply Workspace

You have a site that was just launched or has been up for awhile. You've heard all the hype about building a list and using email marketing, but you aren't sure what to do or where to start. In this presentation, we'll discuss: - Choosing an email marketing platform - Setting up your email marketing account - Adding forms and popups to your website to get people on the list - When to email people and what to say (welcome emails, standard campaigns, automations) - Driving people back to your website and how your website + email marketing platform can support each other I'll demo with MailChimp and MailerLite in this presentation, but you can use any email marketing platform. Bring your laptop if desired, a notebook, pen and drink. Looking forward to seeing you there!

  • Using GTMetrix Reports to Boost WordPress Site Speed

    pair Networks, Inc.

We'll use the GTMetrix Site Speed Tool to live test a WordPress site and then use the actionable recommendations and insight from the report in real time to make improvements using free resources. Because there are many different website hosts with different servers and server settings (some more optimized than others), there are a lot of different variables that can affect loading times for websites. While an improved website loading speed cannot be guaranteed, we're going to cover a handful of 'best practices' that will more than likely help improve the loading speed of most websites. Bring a laptop computer if you have one so you can follow along and test your own website. Be sure you have access to the administrative side of your WordPress site as well as permissions to install plugins. It's also helpful if you have access to your website hosting account as there are simple solutions that can be used without installing a plugin if you have access to your hosting account. If you don't have a laptop or prefer to just listen and take the information back with you to give to someone else to complete, that's totally fine too - everyone is welcome! This meetup is for anyone who has a WordPress website with a loading speed they'd like to try to improve.

  • Let's Talk About Child Themes (Online Meetup)

    Lugar por decidir

As an alternative to a North meetup in our lovely winter season, I'm offering a virtual meetup through the power of Zoom. Since Child Themes were such a popular topic for questions during our last Online Meetup, I thought they would be a perfect discussion topic for this tie. Some things to keep in mind - please try to use a headset mic or at least headphones, so your computer mic doesn't pick up the person speaking as its played over the speakers, as this makes it hard for others to hear. Check back here, in the meeting description, for the Zoom link so you can join us. Hi, all! Here's the Zoom info for tonight... Topic: WP Meetup Online - Child Themes Time: Mar 6,[masked]:30 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) Please download and import the following iCalendar (.ics) files to your calendar system. • Blocks & Triangles: Front-end Architecture in the Gutenberg Era

    Code and Supply Workspace

As WordPress moves towards a future where “everything is a block,” we must adopt more scalable, modular approaches to CSS, JavaScript, and HTML templates. In this talk, we will pair the concept of Gutenberg Blocks with a CSS methodology known as Inverted Triangle CSS (ITCSS) to create a workflow that emphasizes modularity, portability, and reuse. The result is a DRY code base capable of serving up shortcodes, widgets, and, of course, blocks wherever users need them. Presentation by Kevin Hoffman *While everyone is welcome at every event, this is a more advanced topic/ developer level talk*
