Hello,

Meetup fortnightly on Sundays at 3pm

A very warm welcome to Backgammon Lovers and those inspiring to learn and improve their game.

Sapphire Backgammon held its very first Meetup in June 2015 and we are coming up to our 120th Meetup in September 2019. Our membership is fast approaching 700 and rising. On average about 14 members attend our meetups and last Winter we had our largest turnout of 29 backgammon lovers.

This is an established group for backgammon players of all standards, from beginners to champions, it really doesn't matter what level you are or how competitive or not that you choose to be - we have players of all standards and from diverse groups across the globe.

My aim is to have a laid back sociable afternoon that drifts into the evening with people who want to play backgammon in a friendly and welcoming environment. We sometimes have fun tournaments with small prizes for those with a slight competitive edge. I recently learnt how to play with the doubling cube - that mysterious object on the side of some boards.

We currently meet at VQ Euston - right next to one of Euston Square underground exits, and two minutes from Euston Warren Street underground stations where there is usually free parking available on Sundays on the accessible streets nearby. The staff at VQ (Gabbie, Jordan, George, and others) are really warm and welcoming.

Please bring your own backgammon board, however, both I and others should have our own, and I do sometimes carry a spare or two - we simply need one board between two players. We are always delighted to play on different boards that are different in size, style, feel and price and to meet the players behind their boards.

I will ask for £2 that helps me pay Meetup (yes Meetup sadly isn't free for Organisers and I pay a handsome six-monthly subscription fee) and this covers other admin costs.

We look forward to meeting and playing this enjoyable game with you soon.

Kind Regards,

Christopher :-)

Sapphire Social Backgammon at VQ Euston, Sunday, 22 September, 3pm

Hello Backgammon Lovers, Let's meetup at VQ Euston on Sunday 8 September, 3pm. Intro We had a great group of people turn up last Sunday and where we also held a mini backgammon competition that people enjoyed participating in as it was chilled and fun. Congratulations are in order to Max for winning first prize and to George as the runner up. Well done to all the others who participated :-) Sapphire Backgammon What makes our group special are its members and the humour and friendliness whilst playing this great social game. We welcome players of all levels - though do get in touch if you are completely new so that I may provide you with a link to online youtube videos that provides an intro and idea to the game of backgammon. Please encourage friends, family and acquaintances to join our group as the more the merrier! VQ Please check out the following link for further information of VQ: https://www.vqrestaurants.com/locations/euston How to Get to VQ Euston This warm and friendly venue is by one of the exits of Euston Square underground station (though do check TfL website as the station sometimes is closed for engineering works) and is on the Camden side of the Euston Road - opposite side to the green glass University College Hospital. VQ is within a short three minute walk of Euston and Warren Street and is covered by the Victoria, Northern, Hammersmith & City, Metropolitan and London Overground tube lines. Meetup Cost Sadly Meetup isn't free and charge me as the Organiser a handsome fee every six months so I will kindly ask for a £2 Meetup fee (cheap I hear you say) for each session. The small fee goes towards the Meetup platform fees and other expenses that I incur in my role as Organiser. RSVP Please RSVP so that I may have an idea of numbers to inform VQ's General Manager - this ensures that the space VQ provides is adequate for our group. We've had previous Meetups recently where only 8 people RSVP'd, but 17 showed up and we were unable to stretch into the annexed room later which was booked by another party - so please RSVP your attendance in order for VQ to cater for the group. VQ Discount on Food only The General Manager of VQ has kindly agreed to give us 20 percent off on food. Please note this generous offer does not include alcohol and the offer might be cancelled without notice, so check with the staff before you purchase food. In any case, given that VQ are offering us their premises so we are expected to purchase at least a drink and the majority should look to eat particularly if you are spending more than a few hours at VQ. I had a great main meal and a side dish for £11 :-) NB: Please don't forget to pay for your food and drinks before you leave. I know that people genuinely forget to pay their tab but I've recently been left out of pocket as I've had to step in and pay VQ to keep on excellent terms with the staff. Bring your own Backgammon Board Please do bring your backgammon board. We love to see a variety of boards... cork, leather, wood, felt, leather (did I say leather already) etc.. If you don't have a board no problem - however please message me via the message board to let me and others know that you don't have a board. I will then try to bring a spare or two as necessary. We've had meetups where no one messaged me but initially five people have shown up without boards and we've had to initially share one between us - we resorted to playing chouette. House Rules Here is a link to Sapphire Backgammon's rules based on international tournament rules: https://www.meetup.com/Sapphire-Backgammon-In-London/pages/19477054/Sapphire_Backgammon_Local_Rules/ We look forward to seeing you at this easy to reach location in a hospitable environment. Do get in touch with any queries. Kind Regards, Christopher Sattaur[masked]

Backgammon at Dalston Library then Drinks & Backgammon across the road, H J Aris

Hello Backgammon Lovers, FREE Backgammon Social Event at Dalston CLR James Library (Hackney, East London) on Monday, 7 October, 5.25 to 9.30pm in two venues At around 8pm we walk across the road to H J Aris Cafe & Antiques for draft beer, refreshments, backgammon, social etc. Intro We had such a brilliant round of knock-out backgammon last Monday where Graham, Debs, James, Spyros and myself met at the library. We had several rounds of Knock-out backgammon between us, which with an odd number of people, works very well as we've never played this before, but this turned out to be incredibly fun and inclusive. Thanks to Graham, once the library closed at 8pm, we discovered a hidden gem which was lovely and unique just across the road. This was in the guise of a zany antique shop, that is also a cafe which serves draft beer and other refreshments. Here we played Backgammon Pairs - where I had one of the funniest and best games of backgammon ever - the game we played between us was full of drama, social fun and laughter. I think we will make the quirky and enjoyable H J Aris Cafe & Antiques venue our regular haunt to play backgammon after the library from 8pm.. so long as Aris, the owner and manager, is happy to welcome us. Why not join us next time for hours of backgammon and fun? Location This is a very easy to get to venue if you work in the City and Central London. The venue is on Dalston Lane and by Dalston Square and one / two minutes from two underground stations. If you are working in the City you can jump on several buses from Liverpool Street and get to the library within 15-minutes. The library is within a stones throw of Dalston Junction and Dalston Kingsland Stations; on the Overground line you are a 10 minute journey by tube from Whitechapel and also within minutes commute from Highbury & Islington. If there is sufficient interest and numbers we can commence a friendly knock-out competition between us and then if you are feeling the thirst from our match you can join us after for a pint across the road at H J Aris. I will try to find out if they serve food, and if not, ask if we can order pizza in. NB there is no Meetup fee for this event - just come along :-) Should you have any queries about this event please do not hesitate to get in touch.
