Let's hike the Chanterelle and Hertz Trails at Lake Whatcom! We'll go up to the lookout area on the Chanterelle Trail, then return to the base. From there, we'll amble along the Hertz Trail to a suitable lunch/snack spot. After that, we will wander along the lake a little further before returning to the parking area.

Distance: 7-8 miles total, with 4.8 miles RT for the Chanterelle Overlook, then an estimated 2-3 miles RT on the Hertz Trail. If people want to go all the way to the end of the Hertz Trail, we can extend our total distance to 11 miles. This isn't currently the plan, but if everyone wants to go for it, we have that as an option.
Elevation Gain: 1,000' plus a negligible amount of up & down along the lake.
Parking Pass: None required
Dogs: This is a dog-friendly event for friendly dogs. Keep in mind that they must be leashed in Lake Whatcom Park.

Pace will be moderate to medium, not fast, and the group needs to stay together. Please be capable of a hiking pace of about 2 MPH over this terrain and distance. We will take breaks at the viewpoint and to enjoy the views along the lake, so the end time is an estimate. Don't hesitate to sign up on the waitlist if it shows as full, as people sometimes cancel, or group size may be adjusted.

Driving Directions: (From Alabama St. & Northshore Dr.)
Head N/NE on Northshore Drive to go around the north part of Lake Whatcom. Stay on Northshore Dr. for 7.2 miles, then turn left on Northshore Rd. Follow for 1/2 mile, then turn left into the parking area. Note that the parking area is before the road reaches a T intersection. If you end up here, turn around and go back 5-600' to the parking area, now on the right. We'll meet in the parking lot near the restroom building.
