La Milpa Food Tours is the brainchild of two close friends, Dominique and Liz, who wanted to share their love of Mexican cuisine and markets with friends and visitors. With their mazes of food stalls, flowers, produce and household goods, Mexico’s City’s vast markets can seem overwhelming to visitors and sadly, a lot of people choose to skip the market experience. That’s where La Milpa Food Tours comes into the picture! We are here to guide you through the labyrinth of stalls, introduce you to some lesser-known Mexican cuisine, teach you a little history and culture and most of all, have fun!
The word milpa comes from the Nahuatl word mīlpan, and refers to the ancient mesoamerican technique of growing corn, a Mexican staple. Today the tradition of la milpa continues throughout Mexico’s countrysides where it´s products are transported to local markets. The market is very much at the center of Mexico’s day-to-day life and is a cyclical meeting point between farmers, vendors, business owners and home cooks. It is ever-changing, especially season to season, which makes visiting a Mexican market such a rich and cultural experience.
We are currently offering two tours: "Mercado Jamaica Market Tour" and "San Rafael Neighborhood Taco Tour." Our tours will be English, although both guides, Dominique and Elizabeth, are fluent in Spanish. Keep an eye out for our upcoming events! All are welcome!
