Life drawing returns - 1st class of 2019
WHAT'S THIS? ANOTHER LIFE DRAWING CLASS IN AN EX- STRIP PUB IN EAST LONDON? If drawing in unusual scenarios is your thing - it doesn't get much more unusual than this... Join us for another extraordinary and genuinely inspiring life drawing class in an actual old strip pub. Our very talented dancers are expanding their repertoire. No longer content to save their attributes for Saturday night punters, they are now performing incredible pole routines (with the added twist of holding still) for our more artistic patrons to capture them in motion. We are giving artists a unique opportunity to draw strippers performing and pole-dancing in a venue, once lauded for it's striptease shows. The classes are entirely self-organised and hosted by a group called East London Strippers Collective (ELSC), a group of strippers challenging stereotypes and societal attitudes towards strip clubs, by inviting a new audience of onlookers inside. Our doors are open to professional artists, designers, sketchers, illustrators, animators, doodlers, students and first-timers alike. We have worked out a section of the class called "strip-freeze" - a striptease routine interspersed with one minute poses. As the model performs a strip show on stage, our class-leader calls out "Freeze!" giving the class one minute to capture the pose before the model continues moving. This section is a warm-up exercise for the class, and an intense drawing experience. Once the model is naked, the length of the poses follow a more traditional pattern, with five, ten and fifteen minutes at a time. The Crown & Shuttle is proud of it's own history as a traditional East London boozer. Back in the day, as a regular Truman Brewery public house, it was common for strippers and showgirls to perform alongside other entertainers, comedians, and bands, all booked to entertain the rowdy punters. Crown & Shuttle's upstairs venue, Filthy Fanny's, is a nod to the seamier side of Shoreditch, back when pub landladies were tough old matriarchs, and before licensing laws required venues to have an SEV (Sexual Entertainment Venue) license to provide striptease entertainment. ELSC is proud to be collaborating with Crown & Shuttle on this modern, updated version of the artistry of striptease. The class will be led but not tutored. £15 per person. All levels of ability welcome, same for gender. All materials are available for a £2 donation (free materials for students who bring photo ID). If the class is NOT fully booked on Meetup then you can turn up and pay on the door. If the class IS fully booked on Meetup then we cannot guarantee you a place, but we always have space for a handful of walkins, so come along early.

    Lo que hacemos

ELSC are a bunch of feisty, articulate, fiercely independent women, who also happen to be strippers. They aim to shatter stereotypes and challenge stigma, whilst improving their own working conditions. They are bored of working in badly run strip clubs, being financially exploited and having very little say in how the venues are actually operated. To counter this they have begun organising their own pop-up events, to create their own working conditions.

In 2013 they began taking matters into their own hands, and started the world's first life drawing classes the The White Horse, Hackney's first strip club to open it's doors to artists, illustrators, painters, sketchers, doodlers, and anyone interested in drawing from life... in a unique setting! The members of the collective are among some of the best striptease performers in London, and decided to offer a rare and uncommon glimpse into their world. Their life drawing classes have become their flagship event, breaking through stereotypes and bringing the age-honoured relationship between art and sex work bang-up-to-date...!

Sadly, the White Horse venue is no longer, so ELSC moved to a different strip venue; Crown & Shuttle is an old school East End boozer, where back in the day strippers would entertain the rowdy masses, alongside bands, comedians and other louche entertainment.

ELSC are inviting a whole new audience of visual artists to come and draw these amazing performers as they do their thing. All levels are welcome, same for gender. Materials are provided for £2 (free materials for students who bring ID), the class is lead but not tutored. £15 per person per class. Limited spaces available.
