Biography:
Computer Engineering Professor and former Chair Liwen Shih at University of Houston - Clear Lake specializes in smart optimized mapping between hardware and software. Professor Shih regularly teaches Quantum Computing, Bio-Inspired AI, Artificial Neural Network/Machine Learning, High Performance Computing Architecture, Heterogeneous Computing, and research projects. Dr. Shih is DoE Visiting Research Faculty at Oak Ridge National Laboratory 2023 and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Research Affiliate since 2021, an XSEDE/TeraGrid Campus Champion since 2009 and inaugural XSEDE CC Fellow for CyberShake 2013, Fulbright Computer Specialist of US Department of State, and Lekkos Endowment Research Faculty Fellow. Dr. Shih has a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering & Science from Case Western Reserve University directly after her BS degree in Computer Engineering from National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan. Dr. Shih has contributed globally as invited keynote/featured/panel speaker in Japan, India, Turkey, China, Canada, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, U.S. Department of Energy, University of Texas Medical Branch, Texas Medical Center, Oklahoma, South Africa, UT Dallas, Bulgaria, etc. Professor Shih is dedicated to the emergence of next generation of super-computing with focus in Adaptive Solution Optimization via Quantum/Vector Annealing, HPC, Topology-Aware, Latency-Adaptive, Load-Imbalanced, Self-Organized Scheduling, & Bio-inspired AI. Topic:
Moving Towards Compactification of the Many-Body Wavefunction

Summary:
In the first part of this talk, Bruna will discuss the e cient estimation of physical observables in lattice systems, as outlined in our recent work (Phys. Rev. A 106, 062441, 2022). Estimating the complete quantum state of many-body systems often involves dealing with an exponentially growing number of parameters as the system size increases. However, in specific scenarios, we can narrow our focus to a subset of these parameters, eliminating the need for full state reconstruction. One such scenario involves determining reduced states up to a specific size, where overlapping tomography proves invaluable. This approach significantly reduces the number of measurements required compared to independent
tomog raphy for each reduced state. She will particularly highlight the relevance of this technique in systems with a natural notion of locality, especially when interest centers on the reduced states of neighboring particles. Notably, local overlapping tomography does not exhibit an increasing demand for product-measurement settings with growing system size. I will also introduce tailored strategies for qubit and fermionic systems in selected lattice geometries. These methods are particularly useful in estimating many-body systems prepared in contemporary quantum simulators or quantum computing devices, where interactions often exhibit locality.

In the second part of this talk, Bruna will describe her
ef forts in developing a versa tile toolbox for addressing many-body fermionic systems. This toolbox utilizes various techniques, including transcorrelation, DMRG, compressed quantum cir cuits, bipartite graph theory, as well as elements of bootstrap and conformal bootstrap. She will bring her perspective from theoretical physics to the quantum computing community's usual toolkit. In particular, she will explore how valuable tools from quantum gravity can enhance our understanding of quantum chemistry systems. By combining these approaches, we aim to tackle ab initio Hamiltonians with a broader range of techniques, offering new insights into complex quantum systems.

Bio:
Bruna G. M. Araújo is a postdoctoral researcher investigating vari ational algorithms for electronic transcorrelated Hamiltonians. She completed a one-year postdoctoral appointment at the Center for Quantum Information and Control (CQuIC) at the University of New Mexico (UNM) in Prof. Aki masa Miyake's group. She earned her Ph.D. with Summa Cum Laude honors from The Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), where she conducted her research in two diff erent institutes affiliated with the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST). The rest part of her thesis focused on the exploration of entanglement in graphene-based materials under the supervision of Prof. Stephan Roche and Dr. Aron Cummings at ICN2. The second part delved into the study of many-body quantum states under the guidance of Prof. Antonio Acin at ICFO. Her thesis, titled 'Quantum Information in Lattices,' was funded by a Marie Sklodowska-Curie fellowship. During her Ph.D., she worked in part-time at IBM Quantum and was actively involved in the Qiskit Quantum Community, where she contributed to teaching, mentorship, commu nity building, and cutting-edge research. Before commencing her Ph.D., she received training in the Conformal Bootstrap program. Bruna earned both a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in Theoretical Physics and Chemical Engineering in Recife, Brazil

Summary:
Quantum computing is ushering in a transformative era in computation. The fundamental building blocks, qubits, exploit quantum physics to amplify computational parallelism and speed. Yet, these devices grapple with intrinsic noise and external factors like ionizing radiation, necessitating inventive strategies for enhanced reliability. Our presentation delves into vulnerabilities in current quantum technologies, exploring intrinsic noise with predictable effects and radiation-induced transient faults with unpredictable alterations to qubits. A focal point is the introduction of QuFI, the Quantum Fault Injector—an open-source tool designed to inject noise into quantum circuits for monitoring its propagation to the circuit output. QuFI serves as a valuable resource for scrutinizing the susceptibility of both qubits and circuits, identifying critical areas and primary sources of output corruption. As a case study, we showcase the application of QuFI to superconducting qubits, offering real-world insights into its efficacy. Additionally, we extend our exploration to the integration challenges of quantum computing with high-performance computing infrastructures. Our aim is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the prevailing reliability challenges in quantum computing, fostering further research and innovative solutions in this evolving field.

Speaker:
Dr. Edo Giusto, (IEEE and ACM member), received his B.S. degree in 2015, M.S. degree in 2017, and Ph.D. degree in 2021 from Politecnico di Torino, Italy. Currently, he holds the position of Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at the University of Naples Federico II, Italy. Previously, Dr. Giusto served as a visiting postdoc at the Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems Center at Fermilab in Batavia, IL, US. This postdoctoral position was part of the Next Generation Internet Transatlantic Fellowship Program, funded by the European Commission under Horizon Europe. Dr. Giusto actively contributes to the field as a technical committee member for the IEEE QCE - Quantum Week conference and the IEEE CTSoc Quantum in Consumer Technology. His research interests revolve around quantum computing, encompassing applications of QC, problem mapping, and reliability and fault tolerance of QC devices, as well as the integration of QC in high-performance computing infrastructures.

Summary:
In the rapidly evolving field of quantum computing, two major hurdles often stand in the way of practical and scalable quantum technologies: ubiquitous quantum noise and the intensive resource requirements of quantum circuit design. In this seminar, I will share some of our recent work to tackle these challenges, paving the way for more efficient and reliable quantum computing systems.

The first part of the talk will focus on the significant challenge of crosstalk, a major error source in various quantum technologies. I will introduce a novel staggered dynamical decoupling (DD) protocol specifically tailored for multi-qubit quantum systems. This method effectively mitigates decoherence errors and two major types of crosstalk, improving the reliability of quantum computation. Shifting gears to circuit optimization, we delve into a circuit optimization technique called quantum circuit resizing, built based on the Berkeley Quantum Synthesis Toolkit (BQSKit) compiler framework. I will introduce two resizing algorithms: one that exploits circuit gate dependencies and another that harnesses numerical instantiation and synthesis. Both algorithms utilize mid-circuit measurements and resets, enabling the reduction of the qubit count of quantum circuits and optimization of quantum resources.

Bio:
Siyuan Niu is currently a postdoctoral researcher at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory working on the computer science side of quantum computing. She received her PhD in microelectronics department from the University of Montpellier. Her research interests focus on quantum circuit compilation, optimization, and quantum error mitigation.
