De qué se trata
Welcome to Sheffield Mountaineering. We are a long established and very friendly group for people who enjoy exploring mountains and hills in the UK without being solely focused on rock climbing (although we do plenty of that too). Being based in Sheffield we take full advantage of the Peak District as well as making regular trips away to Snowdonia, the Lake District, the Scottish Highlands and the great mountain ranges of mainland Europe.
Our main activities include scrambling, rock climbing, winter climbing, hiking, caving, abseiling and indoor climbing. We cater for all levels of ability and experience so whether you’re a seasoned Alpinist, just a hill walker looking to move on to something a bit more adventurous or anything in between, you have come to the right place. All our outings take place under the guidance of an experienced mountain leader.
Membership of our group is absolutely free but at each of our outings we do accept voluntary donations of £1.00 per person towards our Meet Up web hosting fees. We do not wish to make any profit from our mission of facilitating mountain outings for like minded people under professional level guidance but if those benefiting from our activities can help out with our operating costs in some small way it is always very much appreciated. Please see the notes below and hope to hear from you soon....
Important Notes:
This Meet Up group provides an informal means of meeting fellow mountain enthusiasts and enjoying what the great outdoors has to offer. Although there is always an element of knowledge sharing, it is not a Club or Training/Coaching group and therefore members of the group should not expect to receive any special training or instruction. While mountain safety is always our number one priority, at the end of the day as with any other voluntary activities, you remain responsible for your own Health, Safety and Well Being. For any of the Meet Up activities, please ensure you are comfortable with what you are doing and that you are fully informed of the risks. Any doubts at all then please ask. The group does not have any insurance and cannot accept responsibility for the actions of its members.
Please note the following BMC Participation Statement:
"The BMC recognises that climbing, hill walking and mountaineering are
activities with a danger of personal injury or death. Participants in these
activities should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for
their own actions and involvement."
Route: Halls Fell Ridge, Sharp Edge, Blencartha
Meet at: Outside The Sally/Salutation pub in Threlkeld, postcode CA12 4SQ. There is a car park next to the pub but if it is full just park anywhere in the village and make your way on foot to the pub to meet us. Further details of car sharing arrangements from Sheffield, Manchester and elsewhere will appear in the comments section nearer the time.
A nice easy Lakeland classic. Blencartha is a shapely and iconic mountain rising to an altitude 868 metres at the northern end of the Lake District. Our route of ascent will combine two scrambles, Halls Fell Ridge, a long clean rocky spur with a series of pleasant outcrops and a smattering of genuine exposure and then the famous Sharp Edge, a spectacular airy ridge with some dramatic positions.
The full day will include a brisk walk in from Threlkeld and up the lower slopes of the mountain, a Grade 1 scrambling ascent to the summit via Halls Fell Ridge, a slight descent to the highly picturesque Scales Tarn, followed by a Grade 1 scrambling ascent of Sharp Edge to take us back to the summit before a leisurely descent by the western flank of the mountain.

This outing takes place in Greenburn, a remote but easily accessible valley in a quiet corner of the Lake District. The area is far less frequented than the surrounding honey pots, making it a perfect place to avoid the crowds on a spring day. There will be two long and adventurous scrambles, each leading to outlying mountain summits at the northern end of the Coniston Fells. The Long Crag route on Wetherlam links a series of outcrops before finishing up a sustained and continuous rock rib. Great Carrs Buttress throws up an entertaining mix of slabs, walls and jagged arêtes.
The full day will include a pleasant stroll across fields and along lanes taking in a mountain hut and old mine workings, followed by a steady ascent along the banks of Greenburn Beck leading to a Grade 1/2 (between Grade 1 and 2) scrambling ascent of Wetherlam via the Long Crag route before a drop down to the col at Swirl Hawse and continuation descent into the Greenburn Valley, a Grade 2 scrambling ascent of Great Carrs via the mountain’s eponymous buttress then a long walk down the pleasant grassy ridge of Wet Side Edge taking in views of the dramatic Wrynose Pass on the way back to Little Langdale.
