De qué se trata
STEEP OLD STAIRCASE WRITERS WORKSHOP It’s a tried and true, but steep climb to get your manuscript published. The level expected by agents and publishers is a high one. It means being humble enough to accept constructive criticism and tough enough to withstand rejections.
To that end, I would like to start a group of serious writers interested in refining their work with the help and support of others like them. We will meet once a week for a 2-hour session where we will spend time writing, reading our work, and critiquing.
The details:
1) Be prepared to commit to RSVP each week. You may not be able to show up each time, but please let us know one way or another.
2) The works to be critiqued can be poetry, prose, fiction or non-fiction. It must be a work in progress and not something that has already been published. This is a workshop, not a platform for published work.
3) We will limit the work submitted to no more than 2,500 words (about 10 pages), which means that if you are writing a longer piece you may submit it as an ongoing project. You will be expected to submit your ms by email to those participating no later than 2 days prior to the meeting. We will also limit the number of manuscripts to 4 per week in order to give the writers enough time to receive critiques.
4) We will begin our session with a 10 minute writing exercise directed by various writing prompts. This is often a good way to break out of writers’ bloc and sometimes a starting point for a new work. If all you get out of your 10 minutes is one lovely sentence, then you are already ahead of where you started! After our writing exercise we will go on to the critique of the work/s submitted.
5) Overall guidelines: Critiques will follow the Iowa Writers’ format and that of most creative writing programs. The author will remain silent during the critique period and will not engage in defending his/her work. Critiques will be directed only to the work itself and will be expected to be useful in improving the work.
