Navigating the Rapidly Changing Data Landscape with AI/ML: The Pragmatic Economic Opportunity of Big Data by Dr. Usama Fayyad

Unstructured data and big data platforms have forced a disruptive change that has left most enterprises in data chaos. The combination of new economic drivers in enterprise computing, the need to leverage semi-structured and unstructured data, and the emergence of the Internet of Things, is driving a dramatic shift in the enterprise data landscape. Yet, the ability to drive significant business value from data assets has never been greater.

In this talk, Usama will cover what has and hasn't worked in AI/ML, why big data is different, the increasing need for real-time, how every company is becoming a big data company, and case studies showing the challenges and opportunities for data science and AI/ML.

Usama is co-founder and CTO at OODA Health, where he is responsible for building the OODA platform to leverage AI/ML in service of delivering a retail payment experience for healthcare providers and members. He is also chairman at Open Insights, a technology and strategic consulting firm he founded in 2008.

His background includes Global Chief Data Officer at Barclays, Executive Chairman of Oasis500, and Chairman and CEO roles at several startups including Blue Kangaroo Corp, DMX Group, and digiMine Inc (Audience Science). He was also Chief Data Officer at Yahoo! where early work led to open source and the launch of Hadoop. He held leadership roles at Microsoft and founded the Machine Learning Systems group at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where his work resulted in the top Excellence in Research award from Caltech, and a US Government medal from NASA.

Usama has published over 100 technical articles on data science, holds over 30 patents, and is a fellow of both AAAI and ACM. Usama earned his PhD in Engineering in AI and Machine Learning from the University of Michigan Ann Arbor.

Who is a Data Scientist? Setting the Standards for Data Science and Analytics as a Profession by Hamit Hamutcu

As demand for analytics professionals grows at an increasing rate, more people are describing themselves as Data Scientists. Yet most do not fit the bill for an available role. This leaves employers, educational institutions, recruiters, and customers in a total state of confusion.

Almost every company has a unique way of defining roles and assigning titles, resulting in a large variety of role definitions. This makes it difficult for companies to find the right match for a given position and retain talent. It also makes it hard for professionals to understand what a certain position requires and develop their own development plans.

To address this, a research study has been initiated at global scale, to gain insight about the analytics profession and help support the development of standards regarding analytics role definitions, required skills and career advancement paths. This in turn could support the healthy growth of the analytics market.

Hamit has over 20 years of industry experience in analytics, customer relationship management and marketing strategies driven by data. He is co-founder of Analytics Center, a company focused on the optimal use of data and analytics in business, as well as an advisor or investor in several analytics and machine learning initiatives.

He was a Founding Partner for EMEA offices for Peppers & Rogers Group, where he also headed the firm's global Analytics group and oversaw the growth of the analytics practice. Hamit also held several positions at Federal Express in marketing analytics and technology.

He is a frequent speaker, writer and board member at various start-ups and non-profit organizations. He earned his B.Sc. degree in Electronics Engineering at Bogazici University in Istanbul and his MBA degree at University of Florida.
