EXPERTALKS: Apr 2014 - Cloud computing with AWS

(Updated 22nd April 2014)

In the fascinating world of
cloud computing, Amazon Web Services is the Gold standard for cloud service providers.

With AWS, one can put together secure, scalable, and reliable application architecture for next to nothing, and in almost no time at all. It is probably not an exaggeration to say that this is the shape of computing infrastructure in the time to come.

EXPERTALKS: April 2014 will be dedicated to AWS....and an effort to make the phrase "cloud computing" seem less intimidating... :-)

-----------------------------------------------------------------

WORKSHOP:

We'll first do a whirlwind tour of AWS, since not all of the services are likely to be interesting to you all of the time.

We'll deploy a (toy) web application to AWS, then use the "elastic" nature of resources on AWS to demonstrate how you can achieve some tasks that are near impossible to do with on-premise resources

We’ll use a mix of the AWS console and the AWS command line tools (available at http://aws.amazon.com). Any source code we'll write will be made available via a public repository on github.com

-----------------------------------------------------------------

PRE-REQUISITES (Optional): You can participate and follow along on your own laptop. Limited access may be made available to our own test accounts on AWS.

However, we encourage you to get your own account on AWS. This requires you to register on http://aws.amazon.com and provide a valid payment card. AWS will submit an authorization (i.e., block) for a small amount (usually 1 USD). (To make our lawyers happy...) Note that you alone are responsible for any amounts billed to you by AWS on your account.

You are advised to download and install the AWS command line tools (regardless of registration) from http://docs.aws.amazon.com/cli/latest/userguide/cli-chap-getting-set-up.html

The use case we considered in the scenario was massively scaling a network of test agents on the AWS cloud to generate test traffic to a web application.

The application artifacts and scripts to use have been made available via github.com at

A lot of participants on the waitlist have asked for more seats to be made available.

While we appreciate the enthusiasm for this session, our small office capacity means that we cannot increase the no. of seats beyond 60.

However, usually there are quite a few back outs on the day of the event. So if you are really keen to attend, we request you to check in our office at 10:30 am. If there are seats available, we would be happy to accommodate you.
