National Geographic: People and Portrait Photography

The secret to creating great photographs of people is getting to know your subjects and making a connection with them even before you pick up your camera. National Geographic photographer Catherine Karnow will show you how it's done, whether you are shooting candid images and street scenes, or more formal portraits of family and friends. Learn important photographic techniques that help capture personality and improve the quality of your images.

Please click on the link and go to the National Geographic website to register for this event. If you RSVP on the Meetup site, you will not be registered to attend. Cost: $110

Did anyone else go? What did you think of the seminar?

Nice balance of straight theory and examples from her work. Excellent discussion of how she relates to subjects. I also liked her use of higher ratios in ambient light and how it could be used to steer the viewers eye especially when combined with implied lines from the subjects eyes. She had a pretty wide experience level to address, the folks on one side of me had just bought a camera and on the other side has her own elinchrom lights.

I've received an email from EJ Simpson who is working at the seminar tomorrow. If you are not registered, but think you would like to go, arrive in the morning at 8 or 8:15 AM and your name will be put on a waitlist. EJ believes there will be some openings available.

I emailed them from their email Sunday and they confirm they are sold out but do have a waiting list. Here is the contact info.

Can the organizer please respond as to whether its possible to register for this class at the event itself? I would be traveling from Sacramento so I can't justify the drive without some confirmation. The National Geographic website does not allow registration for this. Does this mean the class is full? No one has responded to my inquiries.

Unfortunately, it appears the seminar is full, and therefor closed to further registration. Since I am not attending myself, I have received no updates, but you can try calling (505)[masked], ext. 111 and check to see if there are any cancellations.

I was not able to register on the natGeo site. This course is not listed in the popup menu of choices. I sent an email to them. We'll see if I get any response. I would like to attend!!

Since the class ends at 1 pm, I am thinking about heading out for some street photography afterwards putting what was learned into practice. Anyone else interested? Jan, could a shoot afterwards be part of the meetup?
