What we're about

Lisbon is famous for its colourful houses, spectacular sunsets, food but also it’s the capital of fado, a unique genre of music based on the feeling of “saudade” - a deep longing. Listening to live fado is a special experience: it can stir you up and take you to different realms of experience. It can be cathartic and intense.

As fado is best enjoyed with friends, our events will combine both meeting new people & an unforgettable night in the heart of the city: Alfama.

Born in Bosnia-Herzegovina (Sarajevo), the fado singer Maja Milinkovic is a recognized voice of Fado and Sevdalinka in Portugal and the Balkans. She fell in love with Fado in 2009 when he first heard Amália Rodrigues. In her new project Fadolinka, Maja draws a musical bridge between her country of origin - Bosnia - and Portugal, presenting a repertoire of songs from the cultural heritage of the two countries. Fado & Sevdalinka these two musical genres present common characteristics: intensity, emotional load, melancholy and the poetic structure of letters. Sevdalinka is a genre of traditional music of Bosnian origin that has spread throughout the various regions of the former Yugoslavia. It is characterized by its slow or moderate rhythm and the intense and emotional melody. The songs are rich in melismas, complex, with a strong emotional load and usually interpreted in a fervent and exciting way. Sevdalinka is like Fado, a song that was born in the city and which is based on a feeling called "sevdah", whose similarity (equality) is in the feeling of "saudade" (of a love, a place or a past time) , a feeling sometimes painful and for other comforting. Fado is a Portuguese musical style. The fadista sings the suffering, the longing for times past, the longing for a lost love, tragedy, misery, fate and destiny, pain, love and jealousy, night, shadows, loves, city, the miseries of life, criticize society ... In contrast to the melancholic content, the compass of fado conveys an encouraging mood and possibly this contrast contributes to the fascination of fado.
