Mastering Harsh Outdoor Lighting: A Photography Workshop

Class Description:
Harsh sunlight can be one of the most challenging lighting conditions photographers face—but with the right techniques, it can also produce striking, dramatic images. In this hands-on workshop, you'll learn how to confidently shoot in strong midday sun, backlighting, and high-contrast environments without losing detail or dynamic range.
Designed for beginning and intermediate photographers, this session will explore how to work with natural light rather than against it. We’ll cover how to use reflectors and diffusers effectively, meter for highlights and shadows, and adapt camera settings to preserve skin tones and color integrity. You’ll also learn creative approaches such as using hard light to enhance texture, silhouettes, and dramatic shadows.
The workshop includes on-location shooting, real-time demonstrations, and guided feedback. By the end of the day, you'll have the skills to transform difficult lighting conditions into compelling photographic opportunities.
Key Topics Covered:

• Understanding the qualities of harsh light
• Exposure control and metering in contrast-heavy scenes
• Tools and modifiers: reflectors, diffusers, and flags
• Positioning and posing subjects in direct sun
• Working with HSS and both On and Off Camera Flash.
• Post-processing techniques for high-contrast images

Prerequisites:
A working knowledge of manual camera settings and familiarity with basic composition techniques. DSLR or mirrorless camera required.

What To Bring:
A Camera and flash. If you have a GODOX wireless transmitter for your camera brand, bring it with you. If not, I will have transmitters for Canon, Nikon, and Sony brands that we can share.
