Hi All.

Update - Rsvps are Limited to 45 Members..Please answer the RSVP question which is mostly about health and safety..

Lets climb up Pukeatua Peak at a height of 753m on
The Southern Side of Sanctuary Mountain. Maungatautari -in the Waikato just past Cambridge this Labour weekend.

Meet and Greet is 11am on Saturday 20th October.

The entrance to do the mountain hike at Maungatautari is free and separate from the main bird sanctuary area that public walk that costs money for entry..

This is a 5 hr return hike up a mountain with a significant amount of climbing hills up and then down mostly the same way.

Optional overnight stay in nearby Cambridge. Sunday options include visiting the nearby Blue springs and the Walkway at Putaruru for a 3 hr walk.. Monday visiting Hamilton Gardens and Lake.

The trail to Mt Pukeatua Peak is on s new metalled one..all weather track with a return down the old one .. more of an old fashioned hiking trail.. being used on our return.

We start off from the carpark at Sanctuary Mountain to the right of main entrance. ( no entry fee for us ) . ..and is suitable for most active Feet First members...Combination of Wide benched tracks and some narrow ones.

Last 20 minutes of walk to the Pukeatua Peak is optional. Not recommended for anyone that doesn't like a short steep climb or walking over rocks . So while others go to the can relax and wait for us to return...Most of this 5 hour return hike is suitable for all weather conditions..

On our scale of difficulty this is a 3 out of 5. Steep hill climbing in some places..however not all day.. New track is used by people on quad bikes to set and check traps by all accounts is not a hard day.

Toilets at the Information Centre before or after, and ice cream or cold drinks.

Note - Please answer the RSVP question.

Maungatautari is a landlocked volcano, and the community has erected 47km of pest-proof around the triple peaks of Maungatautari. This atoll of rainforest dominates the skyline between Te Awamutu and Karapiro . You will enjoy the lush forest and wonderful views of the Waikato and hear and see lots of native birds..

This event is especially for Feet First active members wishing to test their fitness and outdoor skills ..and for anyone that likes bird time away from Auckland..

When - Labour Weekend - Saturday Oct 20th.

Meet and Greet is 11am.

This trail has rough parts mixed in with fairly good tracks.. but not for beginners not used to hill climbing..

A good level of hiking fitness is required and you need to come fully equipped for this 5 hr mixed terrain hike which has some steeper places which require use of hands and strong negotiate rocky outcrops .. to reach Pukeatua Peak at 753m and then come down .

This hike is part of Over the Mountain Track within the Sanctuary Mountain Ecological Pest Free Zone at Maungatautari..Just past Cambridge.

During our hike we will hear and see a wide range of native birds, including the stitchbird, keruru, north island Robin, saddleback, kaka and tui, as this area has been heavily influenced by being pest free for many years.

Located near Cambridge. About 2 and a half hours drive from Queen St.

When - Saturday 20th October.

Meet and Greet is 11am with a finish around 5pm..

Daylight saving time will allow you time to get back to Auckland before nightfall, or join in for the after hike activities visiting the large swing bridge and nearby swimming in a river..

For those interested..How about staying overnight in and around Cambridge or Sanctuary Mountain.... I've booked my rural Airbnb accommodation already... . Get yourself organized too. Monday is a public holiday !!

Sunday options include visiting the Blue Springs and Walkway in nearby Putaruru in the morning ..

Then Sunday afternoon walking around the lower side of Sanctuary Mountain which we have done before .. ..or driving further away to explore other hiking trails.
