Hello Feet First Members.

Trust you are keeping well and looking forward to feeling some sun on your face soon. I've had a few months off hiking with personal changes and moving house etc . It's been good taking stock of what's important in my own life , and its more about my interests and loved ones, and those like you I'm honoured to be part of with helping you enjoy the great outdoors of Auckland's wilderness and the many tracks that we like to explore mainly in the weekends.  .

I started this group in 2010 and its been wonderful looking back over the many,  many hiking events we've all done together, by looking at the photo albums, and the number of people from so many overseas countries getting to see NZ at a grass roots level for mainly free each weekend...So its something I encourage you to do when you have some free time, as this is the reason that motivates me and others like Helen and Mike to plan and run more Feet First hiking events as the summer starts the busy season, and already, lots of new members are joining the number of meetup hiking groups that number more than 8 here in Auckland.

As a special note I'm very grateful to have had Helen's help in leading and planning  a number of events a lot of you more active members have been coming out on. Helen goes out an pre-walks those routes she wants to take you on and its something very important to do , in preparing to lead at times, strangers, soon to become friends on Feet First and for someone fairly new to Auckland and NZ, this has been something Helen has done with enthusiasm and a passion for many months now , in my absence, and I would like to personally acknowledge her passion for getting you safely back to the carpark each time without incident . I certainly hope you wish her well on the coming events Helen has organised until early November , as she has informed me, she is travelling to the UK in December for extended Xmas Holidays and to be home with her own loved ones.

Thanks to Helen  and others like Boyd, and Mike, and myself this year, we're still a very active  online Feet First hiking group .

Meanwhile - Further to my group email sent out recently highlighting the need for emergency use for our Feet First Group ..and to avoid a long wait for help , in case of a backcountry accident, getting lost or worse someone breaking their leg, or something far worse ..Is the desire for our Meet Up group to carry and have a Personal Locator Beacon ( PLB ) for the guide/leader of each event we do, namely myself and other event leaders like Helen and Mike, after two members of the bigger Auckland Hiking Group got lost and had to spend an unplanned night in the rugged Hunua Ranges in South Auckland. Thankfully those two members were found and that Meet Up Hiking Group is making its own plans to improve what to do in another backcountry emergency , which could in practically terms happen to us too .

Further to my email .. Two things have been suggested...

One -  In the feedback I've received ( Thanks Frank)  We individually all carry a small Emergency Blanket , which can fit into your palm, and go in your back pack . They are cheap as chips as we say ...for around $20 or less on Sale now from Kathmandu or another outdoor supplies shop like Bivouac or Torpedo 7 or get one through Trade Me.

In an emergency these little silver blankets .. plastic coated aluminium that mainly weigh around 50g so easily kept in your backpack pocket for emergency ..They can be unfolded from their little sealed packet and are big enough for a single person or two close together..

This is what one of the two lost members of the AHG had in his pack and I'm told was most efficient insulation to sit on too.., and they were able to  cover their  legs and keep warm for the night in the Hunua Ranges and they also has extra food and chatted to keep each other company.  I always carry one too. and thankfully haven't had to use it ..YET.. but it can be used for first aid .

Two - We set up a bank account ( anyone ? ) for Crowd Funding ...to receive donations from members on the events they attend or for those wishing to contribute directly to tan account for the combined funding required of around $[masked] .  For our Meet Up group Feet First to purchase  two Personal Locator Beacons at around $400 each  .  ( at a discounted rate from FMC ) and extra money for Outdoor First Aid training for some active regular members / leasders like Helen or myself or as nominated by you .

Anyway, thanks again for reading this , and I do hope you can contribute a small donation ..even a few dollars can go a long way to preparing ourselves for any outdoor emergency ..to have for our groups use solely .. one or two Personal Locator Beacons soon ..

For independent info ...Have a look at www. mapworld.co.nz at the MT410g PLB Model I suggest we or you purchase .

As mentioned I can get these at $399 each ....$100 off the RRP of $500.

And maybe we should get a few FF members to attend some outdoor first aid courses soon .. If you're keen check out  www.first-training.co.nz .

A two day hands on practical course I have done and are highly recommended for any member going hiking or for work . These are done in groups at Blockhouse Bay in the Scout Headquarters and other places .

Finally - Lets plan ahead now and crowd fund for these life saving modern ways to help us all .

And if you have any other ideas, please let us know . Thank You.

Happy Hiking everyone ...Bring on summer and the SUN please   !!

See you at a carpark or meeting place soon ..

Keep Safe and Be Happy ..

Cheers Stephen F.
