  • Eye-Tracking & Immersive Tech - Hardware, Content & Ethics

    A joined event between Filmologic and Non-Gaming XR. Exciting things ahead! Eye-Tracking technology within VR/AR headsets is a breakthrough innovation enabling next-generations applications. Join us at our 17th meetup as we welcome a host of speakers who will discuss the broad usages of eye-tracking in immersive technology. From hardware, content and ethical implications, we will be covering a wide spectrum of innovation with real-world applications. DEMOS Cognitive3D will demo eye-tracking data captured from the Vive Pro Eye, including gaze data and fixations on their 3D data visualization tool, SceneExplorer. Additional tools for aggregate object engagement will be demonstrated. They will explore how using smooth pursuit in 3D engines has enabled accurate object engagement data. Use cases will include market research as well as training and simulation.

    Volumetric video provides all the micro-nuances of performance and muscle movement giving the viewer a sense of presence, but what if that performer could interact with the viewer, track their location in space, and talk directly to them? He drives the creation of compelling and engaging experiences across all aspects of creation and the new technology needed to get there. Specifically, Ewan is focused on our continuing development of HoloSuite, the only capture agnostic post-production platform designed specifically for the editing and playback of the volumetric video. Ewan applies his extensive experience as a digital cinematographer to the creation of AR/VR worlds. Starting with Toy Story, he formed and designed Pixar's cinematography department. He led creative on the cinematography for A Bug's Life, Monster's Inc., Toy Story 2 and a slew of other Pixar films. He joined Dreamworks Animation in a similar capacity for the Madagascar films, How to Train your Dragon and others. Throughout his career, he has been responsible for both creative design and pipeline development. Discovering a passion for an emerging format, Ewan focused on developing live action and CG virtual reality experiences resulting in projects for the Denver Broncos, NBC Universal and Björk. He is an active presenter giving talks and moderating panels at Siggraph, international animation festivals, and various VR, content, and technology conferences. Steve Sullivan is currently GM for the Mixed Reality Capture Studios at Microsoft. Based in San Francisco, with partner stages in Los Angeles and London, the studios create a volumetric video of real people and performances for immersive headsets, mobile AR, and traditional 2D experiences. Prior to joining Microsoft, Steve was Senior Technology Officer for ILM/Lucasfilm. He led R&D across the Lucas Divisions, advancing the state of the art in content creation tech for film, TV, and games. He contributed to over 70 films and received three Academy Awards for Technology. He is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and recently served 6 years on the Academy's Science and Technology Council. He received a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, with an emphasis on multi-view reconstructions. Michelle Excell is the lead consultant and founder of the Antipodean Collective, a hybrid consultancy, and production company. On the consulting side, Michelle and specialist partners advise brands and agencies on how to navigate new technology landscapes and build strong ‘innovation roadmaps’. On the production side, The Antipodean brings together a collective of the world’s leading innovation and experiential production partners specializing in AR, VR, IOT and creative services. VISYON is an award-winning production company whose mission is empowering innovation through emerging technologies and creative solutions, such as VR, AR, Holograms and AI. They believe that the effective use of emerging technologies we can enhance our physical existence and bring positive change to society through innovation in healthcare, education, and environment. Shane Zucker is an award-winning creative director that has worked across the globe crafting immersive and visually innovative stories and experiences. Having previously founded two design and post-production studios in Los Angeles, he has found a home at Leftfield Labs heading up their motion and 3d design department. Justin Molinari has spent the last 12 years in Los Angeles developing video games, virtual reality and augmented reality experiences. Building creative ventures across a wide spectrum of platforms and use cases, his passion for the medium of interactive experience has led to millions of people enjoying the projects he has brought to life. Previously he has worked with Naked Sky Entertainment, 3DLive and Otherworld Interactive. He now leads the technical development of cutting edge real time interactive projects for Left Field Labs. This introduces a new challenge in moving media in the correct format to the correct places, on time. Essential to this is understanding of all the material shot, what is actually used. In this talk, we’ll cover Netflix’s media mount tool for parsing Edit Decision Lists (EDLs) and efficiently streaming bytes from the cloud, why edit timeline awareness is essential, and how OpenTimelineIO can further enable these solutions. At PIX System, he built a massively parallel video transcoding system and lead a team building a petabyte-scale cloud camera and editorial data pipeline.
