Suggested Art & Culture Groups near California
South Bay Art
San Jose, CA
This group is for anyone who is interested in creating and sharing art. All mediums such as charcoal, water color, oil paint, etc. are welcome. All skill levels are welcome as well. For our group's events, you'll find a mix of outdoor painting, life painting, portrait parties and online zoom critiques and the locations vary from as far North as San Francisco to as far South as Monterey for the outdoor painting. I try to host a few painting workshops a year, but I should say that most events aren't classes or workshops in that I consider the group more of a social group who's members enjoy creating and sharing art with other artists. That being said, if you've got questions, are looking for a critique, or are stuck on something feel free to ask for help though. We really do have a nice mix of experienced artists who are happy to help. Also, check out our Facebook group at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/131295087508526 Last updated 11-28-21
Burlingame Plein Air Painters
“The basis of human happiness is the possibility to be together with nature, to see it and to talk to it.” ~ Leo Tolstoy Or if you prefer Willie Sutton's Law, "Because that's where the money is!"
Welcome! This is a group for all artists from beginners to experienced who want to create art outdoors - any style, technique and medium. We are a friendly and supportive group that brings artists together by painting around the Bay area and sometimes beyond. Meetings are organized semi-monthly on weekends. Suggestions for sites are welcome. After a paint out event, we follow up with an optional lunch. We encourage artists to share their experiences and post photos of their work to our Meetup site. The low membership fee covers the cost of website and occasional costs for exhibitions and promotions for the group.
Unsolicited advertising is not welcome, and will be removed from the group's site.
Burlingame Plein Air Painters’ Group Statement (for shows)
Burlingame Plein Air Painters (BPAP) is a group of artists dedicated to the historic tradition of painting directly from life outdoors. Through this approach of firsthand observation, our members strive to express their unique visual and emotional response to the timeless beauty in the natural landscape of the Bay Area.
BPAP creates plein air painting opportunities on an ongoing semi-monthly basis. Burlingame PAP has established a forum for artists of all levels to support each other and to share ideas and knowledge of their plein air painting experiences. BPAP promotes a visual appreciation of our environment through the value of painting en plein air, by sharing with the public our combined knowledge and experience, and through public demonstrations and exhibitions of the highest caliber.
About Burlingame Plein Air Painters
Founded in 2013 by Jenny Wantuch, Burlingame Plein Air Painters began as a small group of artists dedicated to painting outdoors from life and to create a supportive and social ambience. BPAP has held over 200 paint-outs in the Bay Area, from Point Reyes in the north to Carmel-by-the-Sea in the south. Bart Charlow has kept this group growing and is today the Organizer. This format has encouraged beginers as well as established artists throughout the Bay Area. Today, Burlingame PAP has over 70 active members.
“Open Air” July 14-August 13, 2017, at Sanchez Art Center in Pacifica, CA, was the group’s first show and exhibited artwork by twenty-two BPAP artists. Several of our group exhibited at "Along the Ohlone Portola Trail Plein Air" from July 12 - August 11, 2019, also at Sanchez. BPAP took a key role in organizing the painting series from which the show is drawn. We hope to do more in the future.
San Francisco, CA
We get together on weekends to wander around San Francisco, sketching people and places, natural and urban. We usually sketch for 2-3 hours, then sit down in a cafe to share sketches and chat. Sometimes we join up with other sketching groups or do field trips outside the city. Everyone welcome.
**This is a group for experienced Voice Actors. We are welcoming** ***performers who are not afraid to read with character and emotion*, using virtual backgrounds, costumes and props on occasion. *Regular Zoom readings Sundays at 3:00pm and Wednesday Evenings at 7. We have done over 150 zoom readings since 2020! In person readings in Alameda as health issues permit. Susan and Jeff*** ***PLEASE BE SURE YOU HAVE SET YOUR MEETUP NOTIFICATIONS ON IN YOUR PROFILE, IF YOU WISH TO JOIN THIS GROUP. WE DEPEND ON MEETUP TO KEEP YOU INFORMED, AND WE DEPEND ON YOU TO COMMUNICATE. THIS IS NOT A DROP IN KIND OF GROUP*** A Sunday afternoon or Wednesday Evening, a beverage of your choice, a few snacks, a fantastic piece of playwriting, and a group of avid **Voice Actors** who've had fun reading well over 300 plays since 2010! What could be better? **Check out our Play List of plays we have done**. [Our play readings](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1EN-4UGVOFlHwwX_xF6KqnoYy8e1uaxF0/view) **Below is an extensive description of this group and its rules.** **EastBay PlayReaders is a group for actors and experienced readers** who are theater lovers and would like the social experience of group reading and performing, on zoom, script in hand or on device. The group is open to those who will commit to reading and understanding the play and being prepared with a part. **This is not a drop-in group**, and requires **EMAIL communication** with the Play Reading Organizer in order to be cast in a role. Previous play reading experience is highly desired. In Person readings are in Alameda, CA. But we are excited that ZOOM has brought us readers from all over, who can cope with time zone changes. **Our readings are prepared, scheduled and cast. If you are looking for a "maybe I will stop by" group, please pass on us. Members who become cast and are no-shows, with no warning or explanation to the Organizer, will be removed from the group.** **Typically an IN PERSON play reading will involve** (1) social time to get to know each other (2) reading of the play(3) eating and drinking (4) discussion of the play (5) occasional post-reading social games. Our event is a potluck with everyone pitching in to supply drinks and snacks. Special needs folks should bring their own snacks. The play reading can include both readers and audience, if extra people want to sit in and listen. **CASTING:** Plays are selected and pre-cast by the organizer, and scripts and cast lists are distributed at least a few days to one week in advance, so parts can be prepared. ***The aim of casting is to produce the best overall reading of the play, to ensure a positive group experience***. In a group with different levels of voice acting expertise, senior level voice actors or readers will normally get the heaviest roles. This serves to produce an exceptional reading, and also sets an example for others to improve their VOICE ACTING delivery. Casting typically follows gender and character descriptions from the play itself, although exceptions are made. Requests to be cast in a particular role are usually welcomed and granted unless a role has already been cast. ***Any issues with casting should be taken up privately with the organizer.***

" San Francisco Is My Oyster !!" ComeWith Us and Explore
San Francisco, CA
http://www.socialfundation.com for the full calendar. All the best in one place! Think of this as Summer Camp for Adults. In our digital world the more online, plugged in and connected we become the more disconnected we become from others. This group, with intention uses social medial to be Social in Real Life. The mission of this group is its name. (quick legal note: this group name and all derivations are ™ Trademarked/Servicemarked and/or Copyright protected. Unauthorized used is NOT permitted. This group is part of a confederation of groups. You may NOT start a chapter without express permission. There is no charge or fee to be part. The group must be for the most part "non-profit." You may not charge organizers to list events. The group may NOT be a promotional front, or a venue for one person or entity. The group must be diverse and open Chapter Guidelines may be obtained by clicking the "Contact the Organizers" button) The whole Bay Area is so vibrant and diverse. We have the opportunity to explore it and make new friends while doing so. Meetup is one of the few (maybe only) websites dedicated to having it's participants get offline and do things in reality. *There are no strangers here; Only friends you haven't yet met. (William Butler Yeats* ) EVERYONE IS WELCOME INTO THE GROUP! This is a place where everyone can just come as they are, and mingle with people who are like them AND who are NOT like them. We are not limited, restricted or exclusive by age, gender, gender preference, national origin, relationship status, etc. To put it more simply this group is open to all. All ages, all genders, all sexual orientations, all types - And that includes you!!! There are plenty of meetups that exclude based of one reason or another. Or there plenty meetups where people self segregate. This meetup is neither of those. Diversity is coveted here. People are not monochrome and neither are we. You will fit in perfectly and find a lot of folks who just like you in certain aspect, and differ from you in others. It's the good kind of variety of life. Some events on this group may specify limits at times. Those will be clearly noted when needed. At times they may be age delineated, or even gender related. Limits are placed often as a means to control size. The event can then be repeated/recycled with a different limit range. If there is an event you really wish to go to with a limit, . . . please contact me. You can be the impetus and the catalyst for the next event in the different limit/range. Other times the limit can be waived or bent as needed. Challenge yourself and importantly, BE yourself and expand your horizons and comfort zone. Let your hair down! Go wild! Be open minded and be non-judgmental. The group is based off quality events to bring people together from positive social interaction. Anyone who wants to explore an alternative, bohemian, experimental, strange, obscure, weird, wild, absurd, bizarre, avant garde, unconventional, wild-at-heart side of Los Angeles is welcome! In the interest of making events successful . . . I will spread events across other meetup groups to bump up attendance. For as you know, . . . sometimes people don't show up. Some Organizers get really bent out of shape about that. I do however know that life happens. Even if it's 10 mins before the event. Just change your rsvp. No worries. No harm-no foul. There is not any sort strikes or penalty system, and there is nobody keeping score. The exception will be if it is listed as a "no flake" event. On those you gotta give good notice of changes. It's about fun and community. What I have found is that by being mellow and and having good events more show up. We tend to have 80% or more attendance. I approach with compassion. So if you don't make one event or another. . . try and make it to the next, or the one after that. When you do make it, .. . . we will be glad you are there and all are welcome. Here are the basics of group rules. Do NOT contact members who you have not met in real life. Avoid Put Downs. Speak For Yourself. Listen To Others. You Have The Option To Pass. Expect Unfinished Business. While there are flexible attendance rules. There are sex/gender related rules. As a guideline do not message people you have not met in person. This is not an online dating place. Ladies: If a guy messages you please contact me. There have been problems with that happening over meetup in general. It's just not cool. Meetup is about real life and not virtual. Guys, . . . get off your computer and come to an event. Say hello in person. Smile, . . . be personable and decent. And just be there to get to know people and make friends of whatever gender. You can always use new good friends. And this is one way to make/meet them. Wingman tactics and and Pickup artist tactics are similarly not allowed in this group. Organizers of another group that are not an organizer or host here are also not allowed to solicit members. The rest of the rule are just good ways to live and be. These rules apply here AND on like-minded sister groups. So it also applies on the following Photo and Name: You are allowed to join with whatever name and whatever photo. HOWEVER the main organizers may request you change either name or photo a their discretion. Names that are products, promotional, advertisements are red flags that will be requested to change or be removed. If you are using a photo that is not your face, a current face photo may be requested. Here is the rule of thumb. Fake name and fake photo will be requested to change to a real photo and a real name or face removal. Real photo and fake name is usually fine. Fake photo and real name is usually fine. IF you need to maintain privacy of both then contact the main organizers and just ask. That's all it takes usually. All organizers on the group do have different set of rules. The rules simplified. • No Emailing (do not use the bulk email feature in any way) • No outside links • Great Copy • Great Pix • 4 weeks notice is best. • List any money costs in the first 2 or 3 lines. Not too many rules. Not too complicated. They all have to do with respect for the membership. Let's talk a little more about age: Are you in your 20s 30s 40s 50s 60s 70s 80s 90s ? (btw some write 20's 30's 40's 50's 60's 70's 80's 90's ). I am often asked "What age range is this group?" 20 40 maybe? 30 50 perhaps? Or even 60 70. Forties ( forty's forty ), Fifties ( fifty's fifty ) of sixties ( sixty's sixty ) or older does matter. *24-39 3000 20+ 30+ 50+ 60+ & under* or over. We are just aiming at good community. Yeah, . . . All that is great, . . . But I still have one question, . . . What age is your group? Age is a state of mind. And our state (this group) has no borders. If so then you may be looking for us! *We do NOT discriminate by age, sex or gender, gender preference, origin, religion, belly button lint, etc . . . .* *Do you enjoy friendship, activities, key networking, casual socializing, parties learning, sharing, inspiration? Sketch Like an Architect in San Francisco - Outdoor
San Francisco, CA
If you would like to learn techniques for putting your vision down on paper, join us in Golden Gate Park at Rideout Fountain, between the DeYoung Museum Museum and the CA Academy of Sciences on the 1st Sunday of the Month at 1pm. We will pick a place to sit and will draw one of Golden Gate Park’s great masterpieces of architecture. I am an Architect that lives and works in San Francisco. I was formally trained in an architectural sketch style at the University of Southern California (USC) School of Architecture. I am happy to share the secrets of the technique. I will provide a demonstration with tips on how to improve your drawing ability before we start drawing. Then we will spread apart to where each of us is drawing roughly the same perspective/view. Learn techniques for understanding visual depth and representing it with graphite and ink. Learn how to interpret and construct perspective in order to accurately capture the scale of a space. Learn how to recognize objects as elements that, relative to one another, shape the experience of any given environment. Learn how to frame those objects in a composition that constitutes a moment in time. Bring your own paper pad, sketchbook, pens, graphite pencils, and a sharpener. All skill levels welcome. All styles and mediums are welcome. Masks required while gathering but, of course, you are welcome to remove them when you are distanced from others. Some people benefit from a folding chair or stool. One of my favorite things to do is to be in public drawing with others. -Devin

Imagine Improv Factory MeetUp
Santa Rosa, CA
Creatives assemble! This is a group for anyone interested in learning improvisational acting. Improv is a game-like form of theater where there is no script; everyone makes it up as they go along. It's a lot of fun, and easy to learn. <br>Everyone is welcome. There is no requirement to be extroverted, or have theater experience. You just be yourself, and come have some fun. <br>
Update 9/17/21: We're six-and-a-half years into this group now, and the group is as active and stable as ever...despite the pandemic. Our culture continues to be our biggest draw. If you can be respectful towards people, you can probably find a fun community home with us. <br>
"Everyone can act. Everyone can improvise. Anyone who wishes to can play in the theater and learn to become stageworthy. We learn through experience and experiencing, and no one teaches anyone anything. . . . ‘Talent’ or ‘lack of talent’ has little to do with it.” - Viola Spolin <br>
"Now there are very few rules to improvisation, but one of the things I was taught early on is that you are not the most important person in the scene. Everybody else is. And if they are the most important people in the scene, you will naturally pay attention to them and serve them. But the good news is you’re in the scene too. So hopefully to them you’re the most important person, and they will serve you. No one is leading, you’re all following the follower, serving the servant. You cannot win improv. And life is an improvisation. You have no idea what’s going to happen next and you are mostly just making things up as you go along." - Stephen Colbert

A Note About the Group:
Over the course of this group's existence we've had a lot of fun times. We believe that respect for one another is essential to our group's success. It's the glue that keeps us together, and it's why this group has stayed so strong. Humor does not require of us that we make our fellow players uncomfortable by reducing their role to a stereotype (we don't need to gift the women with sexual roles, for instance). We endeavor to keep the atmosphere one where a person of any gender, race, age, sexual orientation, religion, disability, or basic genes (the way they look, or their weight) can feel comfortable playing with everyone else. Respect = Safety = Trust = Empowered/Fearless Improv = Fun Times! <br>
