Finally, I can not express my gratitude for the staff and volunteers of the sailing school. Here was a seasoned, expert sailor, Capt Mike, showing such patience with beginners---I have seen this in the AMC huts and hiking and biking---but this was over the top. Not only his, and his staff's expertise was so evident, but also their humility---the division of labor was shared ---cooking, prep-cleaning--all as if they had not already put in a full day of instruction. A particularly poignant moment was the dedication of a new sailboat in honor of a past instructor/team member. Because I lost my wife under similar circumstances it was truly moving. And on that instruction. I went to this School to learn to sail--but more importantly to learn to be safe. The standards set by Captain Mike and his team are made of the same stuff that makes AMC great. So, I guess this note is to congratulate you and FIC on two gems, the camp itself, and Capt Mike and his sailing school.

    I my note to AMC/NYC

Anita---I want you to know that I have been trying to get to Fire Island Camp for 40 years-----but something always got in the way (I reserved in June 2012 but my grandson was born on that date so I had to stay close to home) Well. I was there for the Sailing School a few weeks ago and it was a superb experience. My reason for going to the school there was because of the AMC partnership. I have great faith in anything that has the AMC name on it. I am so enthused about FIC that I plan to bring some family and friends there next year --probably midweek----so that others can enjoy those weekends there. My schedule is pretty flexible.

My background is commercial real estate, so I have a seasoned eye for structures and infrastructures, and the camp can match any expectation, a tribute to your building and grounds committee. Your managers and staff are exemplary. It is almost unbelievable that such a fine place exists.

Great group fought feast or famine weather to learn to sail! It either blew it's brains out, or didn't blow at all. But that didn't stop this group From attacking the wind with gusto!

Thanks You Guys! You were great and gave our Instructor Staff a run for our money. I appreciate your energy and commitment to work and learn! I'd sail with you guys anytime!

    Ok Thanks.
I will be able only to take the ferry of 4:25 or 6:50 pm to Dunewood. How do I get to Atlantique from Dunewood? How long of a walk is it ?
Would it be good to take a small suitecase on wheels . I know that for getting to Atlantique it was not recommended to take something on wheels. I am not familiar with Fire Island Madeleine

    Sean:
Glad you asked. September weather is unpredictable. Could be hot, also windy, chilly, blustery or some rain. Best to plan for all possibilities. Wind breaker/ rain jacket, sweat shirt, couple extra T-shirts. Water remains warm so Wet suit is optional. Some people like sailing gloves to protect hands. Of course sun screen and hat.
Food: Let's say no one is prohibited from contributions. In fact a good way to a Captains heart! :)

Looking forward to sailing with everyone!

    Michael

Hi everyone! My wife Kristin and I are coming for the mid week sailing and are wondering what to bring... like what kind of clothes for sailing? Is a wet suit necessary this time of year? A swim shirt recommended? I'm assuming we'll be wet all day...just want to be prepared. And food? I understand meals are included, but do people bring and contribute?
    Thanks,
    Sean

    September 10, 2013

    • Erik P.

Hey Sean, clothes: if u have a wet suit top bring it, u probably won't b wet unless ur capsizing all day:) the water this time of year is nice. Swim shirts are the way to go, a light windbreaker sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, and u should b good for the sailing part. Food: There will be plenty of food u can bring some of ur favorite snacks if u want but I've never seen a shortage of food at the cabin. Look forward to sailing with u.
