Sierra Club Informational Meeting
Thursday, May 22 at 6:00 pm
Selby Library, 1331 First Street, Sarasota, FL
We are inviting you to an informational meeting to learn how a small group of interested folks can organize a Sierra Club presence in your counties and municipalities.
As a volunteer-driven, nationwide environmental organization, the Sierra Club relies on grassroots activism.
This is a no-obligation, informal, and participatory gathering of folks who are interested in organizing a volunteer-driven Sierra Club conservation committee in your area.
Background: Until about 2020, the Manatee-Sarasota Group of the Sierra Club was a vibrant, powerful force, one of 16 local groups in Florida. Its members were active in environmental issues, sponsored many fun outdoor events, held monthly informative meetings, and educated the public at numerous community events.
Hard-hit by Covid and the loss of several key veteran volunteer leaders, however, the group struggled unsuccessfully to maintain a large enough base of active volunteer leaders to continue as a formal Group, and it was closed in mid-2024.
This meeting will feature ways we can reinstate a Sierra Club presence in the region, starting with something as simple as a conservation committee to discuss and act on local environmental issues under the Sierra Club banner.
