This is another special extra meeting of our (usually) monthly Philosophy Cub, for folks who want to work on our first Lego robots activity. (We did another meeting like this on Saturday, but a few folks who wanted to come to that couldn't, so we're having another opportunity for folks to work on robots, or just be sociable.)
For folks who don't have their own kits, several pre-built robots will be available for you to add sensors to and try out.
What to bring:
* Some sort of potluck food to share. (Tammy and I will have some food to offer, but not a full meal, especially if a lot of folks show up.)
* Your own Lego Mindstorms robotic kit, if you have one. (If not, there will be several extra kits available to work with there. These are available from multiple sellers online, but prices have risen since Lego recently discontinued these in preparation for the next generation that they'll be releasing next fall, so it may not make much sense to pay an inflated price for this version.)
* A PC or Mac laptop, if you have one. (People will likely end up working together in groups, and we only need one laptop per group, so it'll probably be fine if you don't have one, yourself.) (PC's tend to run the software a bit more consistently than Macs, and bluetooth is a real plus, as it saves the hassle of plugging and unplugging a USB cable, so if you're on the borderline for bringing a PC with Bluetooth, please consider bringing it!)
* Please indicate with your RSVP whether you'll bring your laptop -- that will help us to know if we'll have enough laptops.
What to read beforehand:
* Vehicles reading (available here - login as philclub, password is the name of the street we'll meet on, all lowercase)
* Description of the activity we'll be doing (available here - same login and password). Note: this is an activity I've used with students, so please translate "bonus points" to "bragging points", and "write about" to "prepare to discuss".
* Mindware, Chapters 2-4. (this is the text we've been using since May, and will continue using through October or so)
Note: You'll probably get more out of this if you have also come to the Phil Club discussion on June 1st, but if you happened to miss that, be sure to do the above readings (especially the first two), and then this could still be interesting and fun. The groups will/can demonstrate their robots at the next regular meeting of Phil Club, July 6th, where we'll discuss some of the things we learned from this activity.
