The Thankful SOJO (on the correct date)

  • Nov 16, 2013 · 2:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Please ignore previous announcement for November 23.  We're meeting as usual on the third Saturday -- November 16.  Come join your friends at SOJO for some more good music! We'd love to sing your favorites.

Since Feb.2013, we've been meeting in a new location!  While our old Crystal City meeting place is being renovated, we've had to come up with an alternative location at least temporarily. Please be sure to log in and check out the new address when you RSVP. More detailed directions, closest Metro and parking info can be found in a File "uploaded on Feb 7, 2013" under the "More" tab.

If you're a seasoned SOJO'er, you already know the program, but below are all the details which may be helpful to our new members.

1. If you have a copy of Rise Up Singing, please bring it. If you don't, we may have some extras available for you to borrow (one time only, please) or buy from us.
2. Feel free to bring lyrics to hand out, preferably with chords, for songs not in the book.  If you'd like to bring a song that most people don't know well, see if you can find a youtube link and post it in the comments when you RSVP.  We'd like to listen a few times before the SOJO to get the hang of it.
3. Bring something to drink, as singing is likely to make you thirsty.
4. We appreciate but do not require, any contributions ($4, or whatever) to help pay for renting the room.
5. Please do RSVP. It helps us know how to set up the room. RSVP by clicking "Yes" above the other attendees' names.
FURTHER DETAILS, if you like:
* Our regular gatherings take place on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month.  We meet from 2 to 5 p.m. with a break around 3:30. You can come for the whole time or just part of it. If you can arrive early to help set up and so we have a musical quorum to start, that would be great.
* Click on "Pages" for additional information such as our format and other good things to know; click on "Photos" for pictures of some of our gatherings; click on "More," then "Files" to check out the wide variety of songs we've sung at previous SOJOs.
Whether you're new to SOJO or not so new, we look forward to singing and/or jamming with you!

Hi everybody, I have two problems stopping me from coming to your group, I'm Egyptian and my knowledge about the English songs is very poor although I like it, but I listen to it in a random way without knowing who singing, playing or writing the words and I don't care about the words,I listen for the music, but I want to stop that, the second problem I'm an amateur pianist I used to play piano in my church in Egypt and sing in bass and tenor and I play piano in my church here too, I don't read the musical note, but I hear and play and I know enough chords. I can send you something I played in if you want to hear me before I come and I'm very willing to sing in English and start to build up my American music culture, thanks. Kareem

Famous doubleneck guitar returns for this SOJO

I'm looking for a group who enjoys folk music and singing harmony- and is open to people who may not play guitar well. Many MANY years ago I sang with friends who played guitar so well I only needed to sing along & harmonize. Making music with friends used to make me so happy. I miss it so much. I hoped to find a group who are more about the friendship and fun than perfection. Your group seems like it might be exactly that, but I live some distance away. Is anyone else in the group from the Charlottesville area? I recently attended a group in town that was so intense and more about excellent guitar playing than anything else - and while I could see why they enjoyed it, it wasn't what I was hoping for. I was thinking that it may be worth the drive to have some fun, make friends and enjoy music again. Anyway, I'd love to hear if anyone is from this far away...and if your group really is casual and friendly. Thanks so much!! Terii Burgan

Hi Teri -- Your description of what you are looking for is exactly who we are. Don't recall ever having someone come up from Charlottesville, but you are most certainly welcome anytime.
