Would you be in favor of "retiring" certain songs?

We all like variety. And SOJO is at its best when it reaches out and explores new territory. That said, I was wondering if our members would be okay with "retiring" or setting aside certain songs that tend to recur at our hootenannies...songs we've done a multitude of times. Some examples would be Blowing in the Wind, Turn Turn Turn and Teach Your Children. We, of course, would not *prohibit* people from choosing those songs (we don't do stuff like that). Rather, we could just post a list on our message board and/or on each invite and *suggest* that merrymakers make alternate choices. We could change the list from time to time, and bring songs out of their hibernation when the time is right. Then SOJO could infuse them with a newfound vigor after they've enjoyed a suitable repose. The process for setting aside songs would not be unilateral. We'd solicit input from the membership first. So is this something you'd like to see?

Of July 11,12, 25 or 26, which day is best for you for an outdoor SOJO?

As you may know, SOJO determined that it would be best to only meet only once in July---on July 18. The reason for that is our first Saturday slot would be the 4th of July. We decided together that it would not be worthwhile to have a SOJO on the 4th of July because many people had other plans. Sooooo....rather than deprive us all of a second opportunity to sing out loud and proud (and play, of course), we are considering an outdoor gathering at a metro accessible park in DC or VA. If this comes to fruition, and you have interest in attending, we're asking that you let us know which dates are most favorable to you by answering the following poll. Please only reply if the chances are good that you would attend on your chosen day(s). You can vote for more than one:

Are you likely to attend SOJO on Saturday, the 4th of July 2009?

The landlords have reserved SOJO's venue for us for the first and third Saturdays of every month for the rest of 2009. (Exception: we're on for Sunday, April 19 instead of Saturday, April 18). But the first Saturday in July is a National Holiday, and we'd like to find out whether there'll be enough of a turnout to justify our paying the rent for that day or whether we should try to reschedule. And the landlords are more likely to accommodate us one way or the other if we give them sufficient advance notice. So, without committing, please let us know what you think you'd prefer. (Or email Freddy back, or post a comment to the Message Board.)

What sort of musical program would you like to have for the Holiday party 12/20?

We're celebrating the holidays once again with a special SOJO rave up on Saturday, December 20 from 2:00 to 6:00 pm. We will have two musical segments separated by an hour in the middle at which time we will feast on pot luck culinary delights. Last year we devoted the first half of our gathering to standard folk fare, true to our usual format, and then sang Christmas songs from all periods during the latter segment. Some SOJO-ites have suggested changing the program a bit this year as outlined below. If there's at least a fair probability that you will attend on the 20th, please vote for the format you would favor most. Thanks for taking the time to answer. Let's make this year's Holiday Party even bigger than last year's! Rick P.S. "Modern" Christmas songs include, for example, Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree, Happy Xmas War is Over, etc. "Traditional" Christmas carols would include Silent Night, Joy to the the World, O Holy Night, etc.

When should we have SOJOs in July?

Our first SOJO in July falls on the 5th of July if we keep to our normal schedule of the first and third Saturdays. Because a lot of people may be traveling or have other plans, it has been suggested that we might want to reschedule one or both of our Meetups in July. Please select two of the dates listed below, or the "I don't care" option if it makes no difference to you when we get together.
