We're on for tonight! Clouds should burn off by evening, last night by the time it got dark we had clear skies in Union. Please show up around 8pm-8:30pm at the Hood Canal Marina and/or meet us earlier around 7pm for drinks and/or diner at 2 Margaritas adjacent to Hood Canal Marina. Also folks are welcome to come later, we will be there until 11pm-Midnight, but please RSVP if that's the case so we know you're coming.
The Perseid meteor shower has already begun its slow and steady rise to its peak on the evening of Monday August 12th. We will meet up at the Hood Canal Marina (formerly called Union Marina) in the tiny town of Union and skywatch from the pier. We will also drop some marine lights in the water to attract a multitude of aquatic wildlife and see what shows up, generally this produces a multitude of small jellyfish (photo is from past event) and occasionally bioluminescent squid. Since rain water and fresh water sits on top of saltwater summer months are better to do this because there is less rain, meaning that the salt water critters are closer to the surface.
It's a gamble, like fishing, so no guarantees that something will show up, but then we have the meteor shower to watch in the meantime. Please bring a folding chair if you don't want to stand, and a flashlight both for walking to and from the pier, and ideally bright enough to shine into the water to help spot critters. For skywatching we will have a set of binoculars. The sun will set over the Olympic Mountains around 830pm and should be gorgeous to watch as well. It does get chilly so bring layers.
