Midsommarfest

Summer Solstice is kind of a big deal in Sweden, and I just brought back a new recipe for Swedish meatballs, so I'm calling dibs on June 22nd! I'll make one batch of this recipe and I will make a second batch with a different recipe. I will also bring some fixings for Swedish open-face sandwiches and would welcome more, so watch the comments here for ideas on what you could bring to round out the meal.

Gary has graciously offered to host this event in his home, so directions will be emailed to attendees the night before.

Thanks, Gary, for allowing us to "invade" your peaceful spot of the world. What fun it was! Thanks to Stina for the Smorgaasboard done in traditional fashion! Great to see everyone!

Hi, I will bring a dessert. Looking forward to meeting everyone once again. Was the address mailed out? Not sure I received it. Would it be possible to send it one more time? Thank you

    Hi Everyone,
Yes, I'll bring 3 varieties of Norwegian/Swedish cookies/bars for the desert part (and a bottle of red and one of white) of this Midsommerfest -- a big part of my upbringing. Thanks so much, Stina, for thinking of this! :)

Thank you, JoAnn! I still haven't been successful at baking at this elevation, so it's great that you can do the cookies.

What I need the most help with are the things that require slicing. My vision in my right eye is still screwy, which means I have no depth perception. It makes wielding a knife kind of dangerous. I'll bring tomatoes and hard-cooked eggs if somebody will be kind enough to do the prep work at Gary's. I'm definitely bringing liver pâté and caviar, so you can mark those off the list.

No worries, we can do the knife work here. Guess I'll provide peppers, cucumbers, smoked salmon, and bacon? Oh, and mayo -- I never use the stuff so I don't have any on hand, so if you or someone else could bring it... or we could make our own if you want to get fancy!

      June 21, 2013

    • Christina

I'm personally not a fan of mayo, so I will leave that for somebody to make/bring if they really want it.

I don't suppose anybody has a source for reindeer charcuterie?

It might not be glögg weather, but I think I still have some aqvavit that I brought back from Sweden maaaany years ago...

For the sandwiches, I am definitely bringing rye bread, butter (the real stuff -- you want fake stuff, bring your own), anchovy paste, herring, pickled beets, and cheese. Other toppings under consideration include the following:
    bell pepper strips
    cucumber slices
    sliced tomatoes
    herbs
    caviar
    smoked salmon
    salad shrimp
bacon pieces (not bits or crumbles)
    liver pâté
    hard-cooked eggs (sliced)
    mayonnaise

If you can bring something from this list, or something else you think would make a good smörgås topping, sign up for it in the comments. I will then provide some or all of the remaining toppings.

Too bad it isn't really glögg weather....

Hi everyone -- Stina is bringing Swedish meatballs and some fixin's for open-face sandwiches. Sounds like JoAnn is volunteering to bring some Swedish cookies? Please let us know what you're bringing so we can try to have a reasonably complete meal.

And of course we always need wine. :-)

I'm Scandinavian and make a lot of the traditional cookies and dishes, so I'm IN!
    What a great idea!

Oh, and if somebody wants to make cloudberry souffle, that would be divine. :-)

    • Gary F.

I used to have some cloudberry liqueur -- it was heavenly -- but I don't know where I'd get fresh cloudberries for a souffle !!
