This is a workshop for people who are thinking about speaking at WordPress events, such as this WordPress Meetup and WordCamp--and for people who might be thinking about speaking at other kinds of events, too. Non-WordPress people are welcome at this event: nothing covered is exclusive to WordPress. Non-WordPress people are also welcome to propose talks for WordPress events if they relate to WordPress in some way, e.g. "What WordPress can learn from Drupal's governance" or "How your WordPress business can hire and retain more black designers." During this hands-on session, we’ll look at what has stopped you from speaking in the past — and explore how to move past your fears. We will discuss some common myths about public speaking, different talk formats, and we will focus on finding your areas of expertise. (Yes, you have areas of expertise!) We will brainstorm topics you can talk about at a WordCamp or other event. Each participant will come out of the workshop with a WordCamp or meetup talk idea — and more confidence to submit it. (There will be a sign-up sheet for 2020 meetups.) ***You do NOT have to have any experience in public speaking. This workshop is for all levels of experience. This workshop is for you if: * You haven’t seen enough people like you speaking at WordPress (or other tech) events. * You’ve thought about speaking at Meetup or WordCamp but haven’t been able to think of a topic. * You think you don’t know anything worth speaking about. AGENDA * Why speak at WordPress events? * Dispelling some myths about speakers/speaking * Coming up with topics and choosing one * Practice giving a short talk PREREQUISITE SKILLS No experience required. MATERIALS 15-page workbook provided. (Please RSVP so we have enough.) Bring something to take notes with or on. OBJECTIVES * Have several ideas for topics you could speak about * Recognize the basics of a good outline. * Apply what you have learned to your own outline. * Recall the different types of talk formats. * Practice public speaking in front of a small group to help build confidence. * Identify many of the fears that have stopped you from public speaking. Note: this is the WordPress.org Diversity Speaker Training workshop. If you're a member of an under-represented group and want to contribute your perspective, please get in touch!
We may not be able to discuss both DESIGNING and BUILDING layouts in the same meetup. I'd like to focus this one on what you need to consider when designing a responsive WordPress site: both design principles that apply to any responsive site, and how to incorporate the different elements of a WordPress site. Here are some points I'd like us to cover: • What designers need to know about WordPress before quoting a WordPress project • Why mobile-first design will make your life easier • Card-based layouts and atomic design principles • Device (or layout)-specific content • Navigation • Hero images, background videos, and other design trends I definitely have my own opinions on this, but would love some input from those of you who are real designers. If you're interested in contributing, either email me or comment below.
Many companies and individuals (speakers and authors, for instance) would benefit from an online newsroom. Studies have shown that most online newsrooms are TERRIBLE. We'll cover elements of a good newsroom and how to use WordPress to create one.
