Livestream: Computer Generated Tweets and Other Prose Using GPT-2

This event will be Livestreamed here: https://livestream.com/accounts/23925505/events/8861798 ABSTRACT: Here we will go over how to apply GPT-2, a generative deep learning model to generate text that mimics an input of a person’s tweets. We will focus on preparing your input text so that it can be understood by the model and also how to make sure you aren’t overfitting. Then we will look at using GPT-2 on Google Colab with GPT2-simple, which is an easy way to use the library that allows you to train, run your model and manage refined models of GPT-2. BIO: Joshua Herman is a Python Developer at Bank of America working on software infrastructure for currency trading. He has six years of experience in software development using various languages such as Python, JavaScript, Java and Scheme. He has also worked in various fields such as Insurance, Computational Population Biology, Distributed Ledgers, CRM and web development. Livestream: Designing Your Neural Networks: A Step By Step Walkthrough

The sheer size of customizations that they offer can be overwhelming to even seasoned practitioners. In this talk Lavanya will give you a framework for making smart decisions about your neural network architecture! She'll explore lots of different facets of neural networks in this talk, including how to setup a basic neural network (including choosing the number of hidden layers, hidden neurons, batch sizes etc.) Attendees will learn about the role momentum and learning rates play in influencing model performance. And finally they will explore the problem of vanishing gradients and how to tackle it using non-saturating activation functions, BatchNorm, better weight initialization techniques and early stopping. Lavanya hopes this guide will serve as a good starting point in your adventures. BIO Lavanya is a Machine Learning Engineer @ Weights and Biases. She began working on AI 10 years ago when she founded ACM SIGAI at Purdue University as a sophomore. In a past life, she taught herself to code at age 10, and built her first startup at 14. Livestream: Intro to Statistics and Probability for Data Science

Those are the million dollar questions we’re all trying to answer with data science. But beneath the glitz and glamour of machine learning models are hundreds of years of work in statistics and probability. So to be successful at machine learning, at data science, requires at least a familiarity with the foundational methods and concepts. In this one-hour lecture we’ll take a tour of the statistics and probability underlying many machine learning models, including defining some theorems. Our path will be meandering and is not intended to be comprehensive, though it should give you a flavor of the statistics required for data science. We’ll meet Gauss, Laplace, Bernoulli and Fisher. We’ll visit Italy, England, and France. No specific background beyond high-school mathematics will be assumed. BIO Lara is constantly awe struck by how math and statistical models can so reasonably approximate the messy real world, and loves to share her passion for the theory. Lara comes to Metis from McKinsey, where she worked with financial institutions on risk modeling. Prior to settling into the practical world of consulting, Lara received a master's from the University of Chicago, where she had the privilege of thinking about problems with no real-world implications. There her passion for unstructured thinking and novel problem solving were nurtured and she took the lessons learned with her into conference rooms and PowerPoint decks. The statistical and mathematical elegance of data science are what animate her the most, but she gets her biggest joy from demystifying the rigorous mathematics for all audiences.
