When the redoubtable Mrs. Clandon, author of a series of textbooks on life in the 20th century, returns to England with her unconventional children after 18 years abroad, everything is set for a whirlwind of twists and surprises. Her eldest daughter, Gloria, whom Mrs. Clandon has thoroughly trained to be a modern, independent woman finds her beliefs shaken by her encounter with a penniless dentist.
Add to the mix an irritable landlord, a strange lady desperately trying to get a show ready for the Midsummer ball and the mischievous twins, Dolly and Philip, and the stage is set for a hilarious collision of ideals and identities. Fortunately, they can count on “William”, the wise and diplomatic waiter, to smooth out the chaos. In this sparkling comedy of manners, Shaw reminds us that in life, as in love, you never can tell.
