The purchase of the island of Manhattan legitimized the building of
Fort Amsterdam on the southern edge of the island, which has begun
previous year. The settlement around the fort was named New Amsterdam
(Dutch: Nieuw-Amsterdam) and became the main city of New Netherlands.
When the Dutch territory New Netherlands was acquired by Great Britain
in 1664, the city was renamed to New York after James II, (or James VII
of Scotland 1633 1701), who was also Duke of York & Albany. He was
given the title 'Duke of York' in 1644, 20 years before the city's
change of name.
