YOU KNOW how good it feels to belt out a great rock song? Wait till you try it will a room full of likeminded rockers! And then... with the professional back up band!!!
SO. MUCH. FUN.!!!
We memorize and refine harmonies to epic rock tunes (chosen by the choir) like Bohemian Rhapsody, Somebody to Love, Don't Stop Believin', Carry On My Wayward Son, just to name a few! (SEE YouTube links below!) This year we even got to go into the recording studio!
NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY! Our patient (and hilarious) musical director coaches us until we can confidently and impeccably belt out these harmonically complex and rhythmically challenging songs - and we all learn it!
TRY IT! Anyone, any age is welcome to come and try it out. And, you are welcome to join us anytime throughout the year - the more the merrier! Last year we had 65 registered members between the ages of 16 - 80! Check out our latest videos on the YouTube links below, and our first recordings on Sound Cloud! https://soundcloud.com/harmonyhousestudio/dont-stop-believing?in=harmonyhousestudio/sets/2016-dare-to-dream-sessions
The choir meets every Thursday night from 7:00 - 9:00pm at Canyon Heights Church, on the corner of Capilano Road and Mountroyal in North Vancouver. We rehearse from 7-8:30pm and socialize in the coffee house attached to the church from 8:30 - 9pm. Our year runs mid September - mid June, taking 3 week break in December and a 2 week break in March.
Everyone is welcome to come and try our choir free of charge for the first couple times you come, so you can really check it out and see if you like it. When you decide you'd like to join us regularly the TOTAL COST is $80 up front + $25.00/month or $250 for the year. Late joiners will be prorated only for the months they participate.
Can't commit to a whole year?
We start with new repertoire in January so you can join by term:
Term 1: $80 + $100 ($25.00 x 4 months)
Term 2: $80 + $150 ($25.00 x 6 months)
Prefer to drop in? That's ok too! After your first 2 free trials, if you decide you'd like to come back occasionally and sing with us casually, you're welcome to for a $10 drop in fee. (Performances, and social events would obviously not be included in the drop in price.)
20% off for couples/family members
AMAZING VALUE! Thanks to the support of the HTP Society and District of West Vancouver community grant, if you attend every practice and every performance, your only paying $8.90/event or $4.45/hour.
TRANSPARENCY: $80 membership fee goes to The HTPSociety (see society info below) and is due at the time of registration. This fee includes administration throughout the year including maintenance of our website with awesome practice tools for learning!
The monthly fees add up to $250 over the 10 months we are in session. These dues help to cover the hard costs of running the choir:
1. cost of church rental and directors for the weekly rehearsals
2. church rental, directors and professional back up band for 4 performances (including a recording session at a professional recording studio!).
The $250 fee may be divided into 10 monthly payments of $25.00 and may be paid by cheque or credit card/online. If you join late in the year, the $250 fee will be pro-rated to $25.00/month.

WHAT IS THE HTP SOCIETY?:
The Harmony Training and Performance Society gives bursaries to students of all ages who want to participate in one of the Amazing Harmony House Training and Education Center programs, including this choir! If you would like to join us but cannot afford to, please let us know and we will send you a bursary form. Full and partial bursaries are available!
WE ARE A NO PRESSURE CHOIR! PERFORMING & ATTENDANCE ARE OPTIONAL:
Performing is not mandatory to be a member of this choir, and many of the participants you see in these videos informed us that they were "not going to perform" when they first started (too scary!). We said "ok, no problem". We did not push or pressure them to perform with us. The more they sang with us, the more comfortable they became with the idea and one by one they each chose to personally bite the bullet and go for it - and.. as you can see, they had A BLAST!
WE ARE A PARTICIPANT LED CHOIR FOSTERING A GROUP MIND:
The intent of this choir (as with all things Harmony House) is to provide a safe and fun atmosphere where participants feel like they belong and are cared about. Our repertoire is chosen by the choir (not the director), and we have a beautifully fair voting system which makes the choir truly unique in it's model of democracy. Because of this system most people feel satisfied with the choice of repertoire even when their favourite song doesn't get chosen. We all appreciate and enjoy the "group mind" experience!
SO SO SO MUCH FUN SOCIAL EVENTS!
Above and beyond our performances and recording session, we attend three social evenings in conjunction with Harmony House Training & Education Center to mark the beginning and end of the year and their annual Jazz & Blues Dinner Concert Fundraiser. Join us for our Welcome Party in September, our fundraiser in February, and our Wrap Party in June!
All these songs were chosen by the choir. More than 1/2 the people in the videos below had never sung in a group before or performed!

ABOUT OUR MUSICAL DIRECTOR:
Keith Sinclair.... is professional rock guitarist, song writer and choral music arranger who is also a soloist with the renowned Chor Leoni Men's Choir in Vancouver. Keith attained his Bachelor of Jazz (guitar) from Capilano University in 2012 and shortly after began working for Harmony House Training and Education Center. His dedication to the vision and community ethics of Harmony House Music School makes him the perfect educator for this choir and we have been doubly blessed to have his band "No Island" back us up for our concerts! Check out our performance video links above!
Check out Keith's band here: http://www.no-island.com/
and here! https://www.facebook.com/NoIslandBand?fref=ts
Keith is as well loved for his quick wit as he is for his gentle compassion and attention to detail. He leads each rehearsal with fun and friendship in mind and some how manages to have the choir super tight and ready to perform 2 - 3 memorized songs (accompanied by a PROFESSIONAL BAND) at the end of each term!
ABOUT THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR:
Sandi Melody is the visionary behind Harmony House Training and Education Center where she teaches vocal technique, small vocal ensembles, and performance classes. Sandi produces 12 full scale concerts for Harmony House each year as well as maintaining her own professional singing career. She is co-director or the newly formed Spirit's Call Choir: spiritscallchoir.ca
Melody held the vision of a free community choir for 19 years, since she started the music school in 1993. In 2012 with the help of a few friends she started the HTPSociety (Harmony Training and Performance Society); a non-profit charity organization that would provide bursaries to students who come from underprivileged households so that they can participate in the Harmony House Music Training Program, including the Rock Choir! HTPSociety has been the recipient of a community arts grant from The District of West Vancouver in 2013, 2014 & 2015!
Sandi's vision for the choir has been clear and straight forward from the beginning... to encourage the community at large to turn off their televisions (or ipad, computers, cell phones), get out of the house as a family and connect with one another in a meaningful way.
Melody believes and promotes that singing in community is one of the healthiest things we can all do for ourselves, our families, and our communities. Not only the physical relaxation that comes from your body vibrating amongst other choristers, and the soulful release of sounds you enjoy (in our case rock music), but it also bonds people in a way that is profound and fun for everyone - regardless of age!
Entire families are welcome and encouraged to come! (And we have a several!) Our participants who have lots of singing experience are humble ring leaders, and eager to help those without experience. Before you know it hurdles are leapt, friends are made and the weekly support and camaraderie becomes something we all look forward to and lean on.
The HTPS choir is a place where everyone is welcome no mater what their age or level of experience. We believe if you can talk, you can sing! So come on out, even if you're shy... or if you just want to sit and watch... everyone is welcome!"

He also helps out the rock choir by singing in the bass and tenor sections whenever needed.
The HTPS Rock Choir is offered by Harmony House Training & Education Center and shares
The HARMONY HOUSE PHILOSOPHIES:
"Your music on your terms"
"Education through experience"
OUR HUMBLE BEGINNINGS:
The HTPS Rock Choir started in September 2013 as a free non-auditioned rock choir to anyone who had ever dreamed of singing with a rock band! With no pressure to commit to a weekly rehearsal and no pressure to perform, the original vision was to make singing with a professional rock band accessible to everyone who LOVES rock music!
We prepared for our performances under the direction of Keith Sinclair, a professional ROCK musician and choral expert. The vocal technique and stylistic tips we teach are current and relevant to "rock" music. (ie: Singing "rock" like a "classical" singer is NOT really singing rock. Only a rock musician can teach you to use your voice like a rock singer. (Yes, there are healthy vocal techniques to singing rock properly!) We're not passing judgment that one style is better than the other, as the reverse is also true; singing "classical" music like a "rock" singer doesn't sound good either. Over the year we educate the choristers to learn to hear the difference and to sing with the rock style with sound. We'll give you expert technical advice how to "get the most out of your rock singing voice" in a healthy way!
Fast forward to 2016. We are still a "no experience necessary" group of fun loving people! Our mandate is still "we sing for FUN first and foremost!" We are still an ALL AGES group, mostly adults with a hand full of teens and twenties. And, we actually have several "entire families" that come out and sing with us! (We also have lots of couples and lots of singles!) We still have a good balance between experienced singers and inexperienced singers. You can come and expect LOTS OF SUPPORT! (Because we've all been there done that!) The only thing that has changed is that we now charge a fee for participation in the choir. This was a decision made by the HTPS board & the HH Directors based on the facts that the majority of participants can afford to pay (and would happily pay) for the deeply valuable experiences we offer, which will leave more money in the Society to help those who truly need bursaries.
