Jack's Canyon (but he said we could use it)

  • Dec 14, 2013 · 7:00 AM

JACK’s CANYON TRAIL Day Hike - Sedona                  Sat, Dec 14

Leader: Special Guest Hike leader     Length: 13 miles R/T

                  Rating: Moderate to Difficult

MEET in Denny’s parking lot, SE corner of 1-17 & Bell Road, 7:00 AM to carpool

Elev gain: 2100’ in 6.5 miles

Jack’s Canyon is a 6.5 mile long canyon in the Munds Mountain Wilderness and lies between Lee and Munds Mountains on the west and Horse Mesa to the east. The trail was built to move livestock to upper elevations. Starting at the trailhead in the Village of Oak Creek we skirt the boundary of a subdivision and then follow an old jeep trail to the Jack Canyon Tank. We begin to climb up a dry streambed. Stands of Arizona cypress, banana yucca, and cat claw acacia cover the canyon floor. We climb to the top to a saddle which connects to the Mogollon Rim and Munds Mountain. Those so inclined can scamper/saunter  another 1000’ to the top of the Munds Mountain. After all, this is a HIKING club - you will want to summit this mountain.

We will rewards ourselves handsomely afterward at a local restaurant. Bring plenty of water, snacks and sun protection.
