I have been busy all month securing items from the good people of etsy and around town for great raffle items and swag bag items! After you drop off your items, you are expected to leave and come back at 1:00. Or you can hang around, maybe shop with the vendors that will be set up (bring some cash- there will be lots to choose from)... and enjoy our DJ Kat who will be entertaining us again! I will open the swap up 5 minutes early to those who volunteered to help set up. Please ensure that you actually helped before you start swapping - There shouldn't be that many of you since the school's debate team is taking on the task of laying out the clothing. Each volunteer can choose 3 items for themselves in the 5 minutes given. There will be a 50/50 raffle to benefit the school's debate team so please bring a few bucks if you plan on purchasing a ticket or two.

We are also open to vendors for this swap for the mere price of $50.00 per table plus 1 item to raffle!

Vendors please arrive promptly at 11:00 to set up your tables.

Swap from 1PM - 3PMish - we will pack up earlier than 3 if everyone clears out early. Please come on time;) Clothing drop off from 11:30-12:30

Make sure clothing is clean, no stains, no holes, rips or tears and no broken buttons or zippers. If you would be PROUD to pass it on to your girlfriends, than you should bring it. Please do not bring undergarments. The shelter does not accept them.

We're looking for clothing from any season for this swap. If you should find something unswappable on any of the tables, please remove it. No one should be disappointed because it's everyone's jobs to police the tables for non-wearables;)

If you are bringing guests, please ensure to add them to your RSVP.

Last, but not least, bring your swaptastik attitude and plan to come and have a blast!

Please take pictures of yourselves with your swap finds and post it on meetup and facebook! We'd love to see what you all have found!

Happy Swapping!

Kim

I agree with the comments that the clothing was in serious need of applying the rule to only bring things you would be proud to give a friend. There were many items with stains and holes. Also, it would help to monitor the number of items that people bring and do a 1-for-1 exchange. I recently went to another clothing swap in MD and they handed out tickets to monitor. The counting process as you were leaving was seamless with virtually no waiting and people left with items they were actually happy with vs. the people with trash bags loading up! On a happy note, I spoke with Kim at the end of the event and really appreciated how open she was to feedback and her desire to continually improve the event. Kudos Kim and appreciate all of your and the rest of the team's hard work!

    Ladies,
A quick reminder: We will have a few dozen cupcakes and water and sodas at this swap, but no hearty, stick-to-your-ribs food.
If, like me, you get crabby/lightheaded when you're hungry, you are encouraged to eat something substantial before coming and/or bring something to eat with you.
Please note, there is a strip mall with a Panera, Whole Foods and more less than half a mile away on Rolling Road.
Thank you for helping to keep the swap positive and upbeat by doing what is necessary to take care of yourselves.
Looking forward to seeing all of you on Saturday!

Kim, I went to the back of the school! Where were you guys?!?!?! I'm meeting up with someone next time, so I can find it. I was so disappointed to miss it. But by the time I got home to my phone it was 12:30. I could have made it back by 1:00, but I know how fast stuff goes.

Oh I'm so sorry you couldn't find us Amanda - From now on it will be at the Lincolnia Senior Center off of Little River Turnpike and Lincolnia Ave. WE MISSED YOU!!!!

I'm glad to hear that clothing will be checked. My first swap was back in November I think, and I was surprised at the time that no one checked what I brought, or even that I brought enough. Haha, maybe I'm just less trusting than others here.

As for seasonal only, I admit, I don't think that's doable for me since I don't have THAT much extra clothes that I can be that selective in what I bring, but I also likely won't be able to come to any swaps for a while, so my personal issue with that probably doesn't matter.

    May 13, 2014

  • Kay P.

I could not agree more with Lynda and Linda Lee. People complain so much I'm surprised Kim puts up with us. For what its worth, Kim, I think you and the troops are doing a great job and I am appreciative of all that you. And for those of you who want to gripe all the time, I feel sorry for you. Take pleasure in what you have rather than complaining about what you imagine you don't have.

    1 · May 13, 2014

  • Linda L.

Again, I totally agree with Lynda! Where will it go from here? Only clothing with certain labels on them will be accepted? What happens if a person doesn't have "seasonal" clothing to donate? Will they be banned from the swap? Do the shelters that the excess clothing goes to only accept "seasonal" items? I sincerely doubt that! I'm sure that all this is driving Kim towards a nervous breakdown...it sure would me! To those who are so picky...go buy your clothes somewhere instead of being so disappointed at the swap and leave the rest of us to enjoy the event for what it is! All this makes me not even want to participate anymore! Enough of this petty madness! Let's remember the basics of what the Swap is all about, ladies! On a more positive note, I do like the idea of clothing being checked & the Ikea bags! Keep your chin up thru all this Kim...and keep up the good work!

This is just crazy! For those people who prefer to choose only season appropriate clothing, then DON'T select those items from different seasons. But don't demand restrictions that will affect other people who do NOT share your wants. Kim has enough on her plate organizing and trying to please most of the group. Volunteer restructuring was the biggest change to appease those who insisted that selection by people was unfair. Okay. To insist that clothing be in good condition with no stains and other missing accessories: buttons, zippers, etc. is COMMON SENSE. I feel like it is akin to bullying to so vehemently insist what specific seasonal items be donated. Come on, people, let's ALL get along. No compromise is necessary. If you don't want seasonal items, then DON'T select them. There are always enough items for the current season available. This is NOT a retail store!!! Please be appreciative of items donated by people. Not everyone has specific season items to donate.

    2 · May 13, 2014

  • Kajal

can I suggest a middle ground? Maybe 5 items have to be seasonal and anything over that can be from any season? I also like to have all season clothing available at the swap! :)

    1 · May 13, 2014

  • Linda L.

I wholeheartedly agree with what Lynda said!! It should not matter what season the clothes are as long as they are in good condition.I totally agree with some of the new rules set down but not with the 1 about seasonal clothing. Some people are getting too picky and all of this is getting too confusing!

Dear Kim, I wanted to let you know that I have had great experiences at the three swaps I have attended in the last
6 months. l have been able to clean out my closet and know its going to a good cause. I have also been able to save 100's of dollars in clothes. I find myself every day being so grateful for the clothes I wear daily being from the swaps. I love telling people about the swaps when I get compliments on them. I always make sure I'm bringing clothes I would be proud to give a friend. I always use the same bags I brought clothes in so I'm never bringing more home than I brought. It's been so great! Thank you so much to Kim and all the volunteers who help out. I can't wait for the next one!

    April 29, 2014

    • Daphne S.

So delighted to hear how well it's working out for you, Lina. I concur! At this point, however, I don't even notice when I wear swap items unless I've JUST gotten them, because so few of my pieces are anything else. ;-) Keep coming and bring friends!

      April 29, 2014

  • Diane W.

I enjoyed the experience: picked up jewelry to match what I was wearing, found two nice dresses and met some great co-swappers. I did not expect 'brand new' quality, so I was not disappointed.
    However . . . I still can't get over the Brooklyn Islanders. ;-)

      6 · April 28, 2014

  • Linda L.

I just had a light bulb go off over my head(while I should be concentrating on work! lol)! This is just a suggestion...of course! Since clothing is going to be checked for eligibility into the swap and that is going to slow down the check- in progress, how would everyone feel about grouping your donations by size before bringing them? That way, after being inspected, they could easily be handed off to the gal responsible for that size table and it could be easily set out. This is what I usually do to make things easier since I usually bring much more than 5 items. Anyway...just a thought. What do you think?

    April 28, 2014

    • Kim - Clothing Swap F.

Linda - I may have jumped the gun about that rule about 3 bad items and your out. The sorters were supposed to be scanning for bad items all along. I guess I never chrcked up on that. I will put something out tonight about it all - I was loopy from these meds when I sent that out - so please bear with me... I'm going to speak with sarahjean when she gets out of school and straighten some things out. There are has been an overwhelmingly positive response to the new rules to my surprise - I'll be back with some guidance later tonight or in the morning;)

      April 28, 2014

  • Caethe

Bravo, Kim! These are excellent new guidelines, and will be welcome improvements. I am glad you are increasing the attendance fee, such a worthwhile cause certainly deserves it, and it is a very small price to pay for the top swap event in the region. Keep up the stellar work, because your regulars appreciate you and all you do! Thanks, Caethe

It was great! Loved the "mingle" game in the lobby. What a great way to meet new people! Cupcakes were yummy too! I liked all the room we had in the gym to spread out. Congrats to Kim and the Girls for making another swap a success! I liked the way we had numbers given to us during the game so we could not lose our place. A suggestion: How about handing out numbers as people check in and then they can take their place in line right before it starts? That way, the people who cannot physically stand in line for an hour before the swap starts can sit or people could even go get some lunch after the 11:30a drop off. Just a thought...

    • Kay P.

Enjoyed getting to know you in line, Linda. Hope to see you at future swaps.

      April 28, 2014

    • Daphne S.

It seems I misread the comment, Linda. I wasn't entirely pleased with the way things "broke down" at the end of the game -- not everyone had numbers so not everyone who participated could be considered for the swag bag. That was entirely "my bad." So perhaps I projected my own thoughts onto your comments. Nevertheless, you made me think and I appreciate that! Looking forward to seeing you at future swaps. Cheers!

Kim I appreciate all of the hard work from you and everyone else that y'all put into these events. This was my fourth swap with you guys, and while I still enjoyed it, it did leave me and my guest slightly disappointed in the quality of the clothes that were there. We had fun standing in line talking to everyone and we loved having music going through the whole swap! We were able to bring back a few decent items, to add to our wardrobe, but I'm looking forward to this new rule that you are going to implement. I brought two trash bags that were stuffed full of clothing, many from high in stores, some still with price tags. (But I never take as much as I bring. That would be an insane of amount of clothes for one person). Lol

Also, I was wondering if you would think about the quality of the accessories that you were accepting as well. Used lotions and make up are not hygienic and I don't feel like they should be accepted as someone's two accessories.

    2 · April 27, 2014

    • Kim - Clothing Swap F.

Very sorry that you had a bad experience. I will be implementing new and making adjustments to old rules to address these concerns. When I heard what went on yesterday, I was pretty upset. To our organizers and volunteers what can I say? You are the heart and soul of the operation. There would be no swap without you all. You have my unending respect and admiration.
To our vendors and sponsors: I so appreciate your support of the Meetup. I hope it is as valuable for you being with us as it is for me having you with us.
And to our swappers: Thank you, thank you and thank you again. Thank you for bringing such fine clothes, thank you for buying raffle tickets and supporting the cause and most of all thank you for putting up with me making a total a** of myself and letting me "live the dream" of 'Head Cheerleader' (LOL!). I can't stop smiling thinking about you all mingling during our "Fun Facts" activity and I can't wait 'til next time! From my heart to yours, God bless you. You are terrific.

I was very sick so I am thrilled with how the leadership team just ran away with it and got shit done! Very proud and happy to work with all of you. Something I need to address: To the ladies who came in with garbage bags who were just sweeping clothing into the bags that CLEARLY weren't even your size... Please DO NOT come back. This is a CHARITY group. You take what you need - not whatever you can fit into your ginourmous bags to send to your relatives overseas or sell on the internet like ebay! You ought to be ashamed of yourselves!!!

The leadership team and I will be discussing how to handle this in the future... but it in the mean time... you are unwelcome to come and ruin the spirit of the swap again!

I hope you ladies all had a great time. It was weird I think being at a new location....but it went well. LADIES - Please support the vendors! Most of them didnt even break even!

My bad...I didn't phrase my question very well! Obviously, if no swap...no volunteers! It would be a nice gesture...but, is just a suggestion on my part. I don't really have a desire to help with the next All Size swap. But, would like to be considered for the next Plus Size one in July. Thanks for all you do!

Working on getting some glam activites for the swap! (Hair, nails, makeup) Keep your fingers crossed ladies and let me know if you have any leads for this sort of stuff - businesses that may want to volunteer!

As usual, Kim, I have already volunteered to help set up! I've got it down and can loan you a portable clothing wardrobe hanging unit!
