## Location: We will be meeting in the Azzar Room at ICAB. ## Talk: Monitoring uptime with Laravel by Freek van der Herten Last year Freek's company released a package called laravel-uptime-monitor. This powerful piece of software can check the health of hundreds of sites in a few seconds. Not only the uptime can be check but also if there's a valid ssl certificate installed. Unlike the alternatives, the package is absolutely free no matter how many sites you wish to monitor. In this talk he'll give you an overview of the package. After that we'll walk through the code and discuss some tricks that they used to automatically test the package. ## Composer Show Take the floor for 10 minutes to show something you are building / have built. ## Artisan Bar Speak one-on-one with other members about problems in your code or just get a second opinion on your code. ## Prizes Each meetup, we have a free PHPStorm licence to offer to the attendee who gets the correct answer to a Laravel related question.
- March Meetup - Real-time Laravel with Socket.io/Node/Redis and Vue.js
Please note that this is a limited attendance workshop ## Workshop Real-time Laravel with Socket.io/Node/Redis and Vue.js, by Daniel Sum, co-founder and CTO at Cherry Pulp Want to broadcast realtime events from your server to the client browser? Well, there's a number of ways to do this, including using a dedicated service like Pusher. However, in this little workshop we will build a chatroom putting together everything up on our own and for free, while leveraging Node, Redis, and Socket.io. Sounds fun? ## Composer Show Take the floor for 10 minutes to show something you are building / have built. ## Artisan Bar Speak one-on-one with other members about problems in your code or just get a second opinion on your code.

You can use NLP to build the next-generation human-face robot, or you can use it today to make your web applications smarter. In this talk we will review what NLP can do for you and how to get started. Ben is developing http://www.ilini.com , a language-learning website.

Creating a dashboard with Laravel, Vue and Pusher by Freek Van der Herten On the wall mounted TV in our office a dashboard is displayed. At a glance we can see what the current tasks for each member of our team are, which important events are coming up, which music is playing, if it will rain in the next 30 minutes, ... and much more. In this 30 minute demo I'll explain how we leveraged both Laravel and Vue to build the dashboard. After demonstrating the dashboard itself we'll take a deep dive in the code. We'll take a look at the entire flow: the grid system, broadcast events, the Pusher service, some cool Vue mixins and much more. After this talk you'll be able to setup a dashboard using our code available at https://github.com/spatie/dashboard.spatie.be Length: 30 min The story behind our open source efforts by Freek Van der Herten At my company we create a lot of open source code. Our packages have recently crossed the magical one million downloads mark. I'm very proud that the Laravel and PHP community find our packages useful. In this short talk I'd like to share the story behind our packages. I'll also shortly demo a few of them. Length: 30 min Freek is a partner & developer at Spatie (https://spatie.be/), a webdesign agency based in Antwerp that specializes in Laravel development. Freek and his colleagues at Spatie are world-famous for their contribution to the Laravel community (Spatie's Laravel packages have been downloaded over 1 million times!). See Freek's blog and newsletter at www.murze.be. ---------------- Simple setup, simple life. Using Valet in your workflow. by Gilbert West Gilbert will walk us through getting Valet setup on a Mac, install a Laravel project and show us how to quickly demo prototypes to clients before you even set up any hosting. He'll also show us a tool for adapting the out of the box auth scaffolding to his own preferences. Ideal for beginners and solo freelancers. Presentation time: 20 minutes Gilbert West is a Web Developer who uses Laravel on a daily basis. ---------------- Show and tell - project demos Several members of the group will give short 3 minute demos of something they have made / are making using Laravel. - Laravel Brussels June Meetup
Part #1 How To Roll Your Own: experiences and observations of creating your own development tools by Jan Oris As we mature as software developers, it becomes more and more important to increase the speed with which we are able to develop our applications. This can be done in a number of different ways, e.g. use a new IDE, use a new framework, pull in a specific package via composer, … In the last couple of years however, Jan has felt the need to take this concept one step further by creating a set of custom PHP packages that are perfectly in line with his own preferences and work flow. These packages have allowed him to significantly speed up the development of his projects by reducing the amount of repetitive actions and boiler plate code. In this talk, Jan will give a brief demonstration of the tools and techniques he has used to accomplish this and show how to do the same for your projects, be it Laravel, Symfony, Drupal or Wordpress. Additionally, he will highlight some of the lessons he learned over the last couple of years while taking this approach. Jan Oris is a freelance PHP developer who has over 3 years of experience in PHP web development and currently has his own web development company called Ixudra. He focuses primarily on Laravel web development and puts a lot of focus and attention towards unit testing and code optimisation. Part #2 Mini-talks - tips, tricks and ideas Take the floor for 10 minutes and tell us about: - how you've solved a specific problem; - how you use a specific tool/feature; - or a project you're working on, if you need feedback or help. Other valid topics: anything that makes us think and talk about code! Part #3 Chat & drinks at BrewDog :)
- Summer meetup - Jump on the Command Bus!
Experiment with the Command Bus in Laravel 5, by Jonathan (http://www.meetup.com/Laravel-Brussels/members/148806972/). Have you heard about the Command Bus pattern? A command bus is what takes a command object (i.e. a task your application needs to perform) and dispatches it to a handler. Jonathan will explain how this works in Laravel 5, why it's a good idea to use this pattern and give some practical examples! The talk will be followed by an open discussion. Just bring up the topics you'd like to discuss, get advice on any coding issues or get feedback on your latest awesome Laravel project. If you'd like to give a talk or present some experiment, just drop us a line!
