Kennedy Canyon Ridge, Ojai, 8 miles/1,500'

  • Dec 9, 2010 · 1:00 PM

Hike is cross-posted with
Calabasas Day Hikers Meetup. At last--it's cool enough for Ojai. We're in a small window of opportunity for hiking here because it's too hot in the summer and often too wet in the winter (making stream & river crossings hard). There's a recently built new trail along the Kennedy Canyon Ridge, so let's get up there for great views of the mountains beyond and the Ojai Valley below. Robert, Holly and I have explored this area several times this year, and between the three of us, we've hiked all the trails. Now we'll try to put a few of them together with loops, lollipops and little side trails. Exploratory Hike We'll be looking for routes/trails/connections, perhaps with some out-and-back sections. So if you like the idea of exploring, and helping with route-finding, this sort of adventure will suit you.
Level: Average speed 3mph. If you can keep up with me or any of these hikers, this hike will suit you:

  • Agi, Alison, Amy, Anna, Bob L, Bob Mc, 2 Christines, Darina, Diane, Elyse, Hallie, Holly, Irma, Jennifer, Karen, Karin, Kelly, Kimo, Lyman, Lynn, Mark, Mary, Norma, Paul, Rhonda, Robert, Ron, Shari, Sara.

Stats: Mileage/elevation are estimates only. We'll probably hike until sunset--use up as much daylight as possible!
Bring: Snacks, 3L water, trekking poles if you like using them.
Wear: Long pants and sleeves for tick, poison oak, and brush protection. Layers, shoes/boots with lug soles.
Terrain: Single track, fireroad, small stretch of brushy trails.
Dogs: Well behaved leashed dogs welcome if they can go the distance, and sit quietly if a horse approaches. Please clean up after your dog.
Meeting Place: Will be emailed to "yes" RSVP's.

Met our goal, because trails were well cleared, so we went much farther along the ridge than last time. Wonderful views and company!

I now realize how much more beautiful these trails are in the afternoon light. Thanks to Darina, we spotted Ojai's "pink moment," when Topatopa Bluff was lit up in a pink hue as the sun set. Just gorgeous! Thanks, Commandos, for putting up with thick brush, being jabbed at from all angles, and being Gung-ho about exploring.

Hi Tamara, no this isn't suitable for a beginner. Few hikers can move at 3mph sustained over 8 miles/1,500'. Those on the list above can. I can help you find easier hikes. I'll email you.
