12/3/09 hike: fire tower on Nordhoff Peak.
The nice thing about this hike is that we do most of the ascent early in the morning. We'll be on all the trails shown in pics here (http://www.meetup.com/fun-in-the-sun-Oxnard/photos/all_photos/?photoAlbumId=904783), plus about 14 more miles.
Variety of interesting terrain--shady/switchback/single track trails, wide open fireroad with unobstructed views, and trailblazing, i.e. finding a cross country route for the first time. Stunning views of the Sespe Wilderness to the north, and Ojai to the south, while we traverse several miles of the Nordhoff Ridge Fire Road. Three peaks: Sisar (5,560'), Chief (5,530'), Nordhoff (4,485'). Some rock scrambling, suitable only for those with good balance, fleet of foot and an eye for adventure. There might be some crazy bugs too. Flying earwigs galore were on top of Chief Peak on a previous trip. Terrain: Single track, fireroad, trailblazing with rocky scrambles.
Stats: Estimated at 20 miles/5,000'. All day hike. You should have no evening plans.
Bring: 4+ liters water, electrolytes, plenty food (lunch, dinner, snacks), first aid kit, sunscreen, camera, the ten essentials (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ten_Essentials), GPS if you have one, trekking poles if you like them, gloves, a headlamp.
There are small creek crossings that may be higher than normal. You may want to take lightweight water shoes and washcloth to dry off.
Wear: Lug soles, hat, layers. It can be very cold at 5,500'.
Dogs: Okay, if they can handle the stats.
Meeting Place: will be emailed to participants.
Help keep our National Forest clean:
Pick up just one piece of trash, that's all we ask. If we help out on every hike, we do our part to keep our parks clean. Even one piece each will make a difference over time.
