I'm the slowest on these hikes, so let's not slow the group down any more.
For those of you who have done strenuous trailblazing hikes with me, you've been referred to as Camille's Commandos--here (http://www.meetup.com/calabasasdayhikers/calendar/15540775/)and here (http://www.meetup.com/fun-in-the-sun-Oxnard/calendar/15541766/). So come on, Commandos--here's one for you. Great training for our 12-20 milers.
Dos Vientos Area, Newbury Park:
Norma has picked this area for today, so this one is especially for her. Email me with any requests for future hikes.
Today, we'll take you on a route that includes some peaks and valleys with gorgeous views of the surrounding area. There's 1/8 mile exploratory section (a route I don't know too well, so will be looking for it).
Time: You should aim to be there at 1:00PM, and we'll leave as soon as everyone arrives. We'll wait 15 minutes for you until 1:15PM. If you get there at 1:16PM, we'll be gone.
Stats: About 6-8 miles, 1,000'. We'll finish before 5:00PM
Terrain: Single track, fireroad, brushy trail.
Level: Moderate, but must be able to keep pace with group.
Bring: Snack, water, first aid kit, camera, trekking poles if you like using them. We return before sunset, but you should always carry a headlamp (I have extras to lend).
Wear: Lug soles, layers.
Terrain: Mostly fireroad, one brushy trail (low brush), so shorts/short sleeves are okay.
Dogs: Well behaved dogs welcome if you don't mind taking them on brushy trail (ticks). Open Space Rules (http://www.cosf.org/website/html/os-rules.html): Dogs must be restrained by a leash not exceeding six feet in length, and must be under control at all times..
Meeting Place: On the sidewalk, at main entrance to Dos Vientos Community Park, 4801 Borchard Rd, Thousand Oaks (Newbury Park area).
