The Furball 3000

Perhaps some of you have heard about the Gumball 3000. It's a prestigious road rally that showcases cars of all kinds from all around the world. It's exclusive, spendy, and it's usually on a different continent. I've always wanted to do a road rally. Just travel from city to city, partying every night, having a good time on the road with friends, acquaintances, and total strangers who will hopefully become friends. So, instead of saving up 10's of thousands of dollars to try to get into the gumball... I figured perhaps a rally of my own would suffice. The route is to be determined, and I am open to suggestions (maybe SEA-Boise-SLC-Denver-KC-St.Louis-Chicago-Pittsburgh.) The date... to be determined, though I was thinking a run from Seattle to Anthrocon 2013 would be very appropriate (the fast and the furrious). Showers would be required But a run from Seattle to Pittsburgh, 7 days, ~3000 miles... ending the night before the biggest furcon in the world? I think that could be pretty sweet.

Is this being converted into the boiling meet?

    July 15, 2013

    • Blaidd G.

      I'd prefer not to boil.

Sorry, just being silly. I'm not sure where this meet stands anymore. It originally was meant to be group up at this location, then drive across country to a fur con. Except I could have sworn the fur con already happened by now.

I'd love for this to happen, butttttt.... the way gas prices are going. :(

My little focus cost me a small fortune in gas to drive to Chicago. I don't think gas is going to do anything but continue to go up.

Is this still planning to happen?

A lot of the cost of motel and food can be reduced by having a couple RVs, spending the night at rest stops, bringing food, etc. But it's not meant to be a super cheap really fast method. It's a road trip. Explore the country you live in. enjoy the views. Etc.

    Then there's parking fees at the con, ($20/day, 4 days, = $20 /person. So that's a grand total of approximately $950.
That's also not factoring in vehicle wear and tear, road tolls, miscellaneous expenses, etc.

$950, (or even $850, if you're frugal) is more than I want to spend just getting to and from a con. Especially when I can get a plane ticket for about $300 cheaper.

That is assuming I even go.

So I just did some number crunching.
Distance round trip (including up to 250mi lost/detours each way) is 6,500 miles.
Assuming 27mpg (combined cty/hwy ave for my car), that's[masked]gal, assuming $4.50/gal (worst case) = $1,083.33
/ 4 people = $270 per person for round trip gas.
    Since its a multi-night (6?) trip, assuming average cost /person = $25/night, x 12 nights, that's another $300.
Then there's food, and you'll be eating out since motels don't have full kitchens. $30/day = $360.

EDIT: Just read the time. I don't think I'll make any promises this far into the future. Maybe I'll change my mind, but for now, it's a no.

This neeeeeds to happen. A huge road trip like this would be awesome.

One way I've found to save money on road trips is to stay at camping sites instead of hotels, that's what all the big biker gangs do.

It's a wonderful idea! By 2013 my finances should be in order, and the old car should be restored to the point where I could take it on a road trip. Count me in!

I wouldn't mind joining. This sounds like a whole lot of fun! I am SO gonna stick my head out the window! :D

The only thing I'd worry about is getting enough money for food, gas, places to sleep, etc. But, I think I'll worry about that when the time comes.

I would totally be down for this if I could get the time off... and if my Mustang got better gas mileage XD
