Games for Change & Health Workshop: Brainstorming & Game Design Jam for HIV/Aids

As part of Digital Capital Week taking place in DC from June 10-20, on Monday June 14 from 12noon-4pm at Spectrum (2000 K Street NW, DC), Games Gateway will be leading a workshop entitled Games for Change & Health Workshop: Brainstorming and Game Design Jam for HIV/Aids.

HIV/Aids is present at an astonishingly high percentage in the District. Across the United States and around the world, across all demographics, HIV/AIDS continues to spread. This workshop will a 4 hour learning, game development brainstorming and (if there is time) game development session on the topic of HIV/AIDS games.

The agenda at this time is as follows:

12:00noon - Introductions of Attendees to each other (This will be a brown bag lunch so bring your own. Drinks and snacks to be supplied for the workshop.)

12:15pm - Panel presentation by HIV/AIDS subject matter experts on the latest information about AIDS and its impact on a variety of communities.

Our panelists include:

David Phillips David is 28-year survivor with HIV and works as a information governance contractor at NIH. He leads early organizing to host Gay Men's Health Summit 2012 in the Nation's Capital in conjunction with the 2012 International AIDS Conference. Justin Goforth, RN, Director of Medical Adherence Unit and STD Services, Whitman-Walker Clinic

Since 2006, Justin has served as Whitman-Walker’s Director of Medical Adherence Unit and STD Services. Whitman-Walker is the largest nongovernmental HIV and AIDS medical and service organization in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. 1:00pm - Game Design Overview: A top level look at some key components of effective games

1:45pm - Break and Chat

2:00pm - Game Brainstorming - the group will be broken down into subgroups of 5 people who will come together to brainstorm a series of game ideas. The group will then choose the best of to present.

3:00pm - Presentation and voting on games to move forward for development

3:45pm- 4:00pm - Discussion and further brainstorming on resources needed to build and possibly have a Game Jam for the development of these games

4:00pm - close of workshop.

Open until 5pm for further discussion and beginning of some development if people are interested and available.

The parameters of the games will be decided upon and developed by you as a group: who is the target audience, what are the key messages, what is the platform (mobile, PC, social media, other), what is the game play - all these elements will be decided by you. I am open to discussion about the workshop, ideas of best to manage it and I need breakout group leaders. Please contact me if you are interested in contributing in some way.

This gathering is open for all participants, regardless of knowledge of the topic or experience in game design. We do need the following to join our ranks:
* Game designers and developers - off all levels of skill. In mobile, PC, social media and any other format that you think may be of interest. And bring your laptops.
* Interactive designers and developers - In mobile, PC, social media and any other format that you think may be of interest.
* Animators
* Character developers
* Graphic artists
* Copy writers
* Business thinkers - just in case we want to get funding, do business/partnership development
* Subject Matter Experts in HIV/AIDS - from all perspectives
* Anyone wanting to get creative and just contribute their brains, and energy

    The two speakers Justin Goforth and David Phillips who spoke about the HIV situation in DC and the US overall were excellent - would could not stop ourselves from listening to them. And Brian Judy did a great job talking about The brainstorming was a bit short, but everyone was so engaged.
