Sac Jam #08 WEEKEND LONG GAME JAM!!!

  • Sep 22, 2012 · 12:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Unlike the previous jams this one will start a little bit earlier and we will actually be providing food, and drinks! This is a weekend long event, so come prepared to hack away at something for more then the usual 6 hours :-)

Ticket details

The fee for this event is 15 dollars per-person (+1 guest), if you did not pay via the meetup, will need to be done at the even via registration.

Schedule

SATURDAY

11:00am - 12:00pm pre-jam mingle, registration

12:00pm - 1:00pm meetup intro/break up into teams/registration

1:30pm - 12:00am build games

SUNDAY

1:00am - 7:45pm work (and sleep?)

7:45pm - 8:10pm wrap up

8:20pm - 9:00pm game presentations

9:00pm - 9:20pm Group post-mortem

Food details

We will be providing food based on the the amount of money we receive from those who have signed up.

All the other jams have been free, why am I paying for this one?

The other jams were short, and we were not providing food and drinks. This event will be for an entire weekend and we will be providing food and drinks. We will also be using the funds to help pay for any other supplies we may need, paying for space and whatever is left will go towards future events.

Requirements

MUST BRING A LAPTOP OR COMPUTER!!! WE WILL NOT BE PROVIDING A COMPUTER!

What if I can't make the entire jam?
That is totally fine, just make sure to tell your team that... I would advise not being the teams programmer.

Who can come

Although you can still come if you are a designer, or an idea person, I highly recommend that you come into this jam fully prepared! As it will be a weekend long event!

Rules

I have made a post about something should and shouldn't be doing at the jam, make sure to check that out as well! CLICK HERE!

The past jams have been really fun, I think this one will blow all the others out of the water :-D

So bummed I missed out on the game jam this weekend! Next time. I hear there were some C#/XNA programmers creating a cool game. I just started with XNA and I would love to meet up and talk with one or all of you guys. Hit me up on Twitter @beckercolten

    September 24, 2012

my game is currently live at http://microwebdiner.... although i've worked on it a bit since the end of the jam so it doesn't accurately reflect the 48 hours. I did submit a zip of mine at the end of the jam though and I think Joe will be posting it.

Hey, Joe! I've never been to any event like this, and I'm not sure if I'm fully.. qualified. I used to play around with YoYo Games' Game Maker a couple years ago, but I was never all that proficient with it. But since then I've started learning real programming, and I'm currently developing a strategy-RPG with some close friends and an uncle. So.. I'm not really certain what I'll be able to contribute, 'cause it seems like there'd be a lot of people sort of... wayyy out of my league. But the event sounds really cool, and I want to try it out. I just have a few questions: Is the event similar to the Ludum Dare competition, where a time limit is given to individuals and teams to create an entire game from scratch? What are we going to do with our unfinished projects? Would there be time to perhaps discuss how are own projects are going, and to seek design or development advice? Should I bring my desktop or laptop? Do I need to bring anything else?

"where a time limit is given to individuals and teams to create an entire game from scratch?"
For our usual monthly jams it's only 6 hours teams are given, for this jam it's going from Saturday to Sunday, so you will have about 31 hours. It is required that teams start from scratch. You can not work on existing stuff either. Using open source stuff is fine. I have a link to the rules, you should check it out!

"What are we going to do with our unfinished projects?" That is really up to the team of the project. We always encourage that each team continue on after the jam, but that is not the point. The point of the jam is to meet new people, create potential teams, and to prototype new and innovative ideas for games.

"Would there be time to perhaps discuss how are own projects are going, and to seek design or development advice?"
Yes! After we finish presenting we alway do a group post-mortem to see how it went for everyone. Check out our youtube channel to view previous game jam post-mortems and games made http://www.youtube.co... If you have advice or tips on jamming, just ask any dev at the event! Everyone super nice and willing to help

"Should I bring my desktop or laptop?"
Most bring a laptop, but you can bring your desktop if you'd like :-) Either way having some sort of a computer is a must!

"Do I need to bring anything else?"
If your going to stay all night, maybe a pillow? 15 dollars as that is the cost for the event if you wish to participate :-) Most of the time the jams are free, but we will be providing food. Bring a friend and jam away :-D

Hope that answers all your questions! If you have anymore let me know!

    Hi Joe,
Is there a topic or theme for this one, or can we build whatever game we want?

There will be a theme, but you do NOT have to follow it, this is very much a more open jam. Can build whatever you want! Just not work on an existing project.

    There's a conflict with http://www.meetup.com/gdgsacramento/events/78169792/

I think this one was moved here just slightly before the other.

Regardless, I won't be able to attend either now, on account of family stuff that weekend. :(

I would like to start developing a game from scratch to finish in the time period allotted using C++ SFML. What is the best way to start working with team mates who will be on board to use these avenues to create a video game? Is there an ideas board somewhere were we can post ideas before the Jam to see who would be interested outside of the Jam? This way the Jam is spent actually working on creating and not deciding what technologies will be used.
