There are plenty of tutorials on the web for learning the basics of Photoshop, but making games comes with it's own set of unique challenges that are rarely addressed. Even experienced PS users can run into bottlenecks when working with sprite animations and seamless tile maps for the first time.

This deep dive will focus on the features of Photoshop that are most useful for creating 2D game art assets, including ways to speed up or automate the non-creative (but necessary) production and exporting processes. Plus, there will be some useful tips for customizing or creating tool presets to suit your particular project. Be sure to bring a laptop with Photoshop to load custom scripts and follow along!

Topics will include: resolution and grid setup, using layer comps for animation and recoloring, smart objects, slices, adding scripts and presets, and customizing brushes/textures for seamless tiling.

Chris Hernandez is a freelance graphic designer from Dallas who likes making video games more than he likes working in advertising. He is currently developing Super Rad Raygun under Majesco's Midnight City label, and is also a founding member of Studio Mercato in NYC. Despite all that, he still finds it weird to call himself a game developer, since he mostly just draws little pictures. You can see his latest game-related work at
