PR firm settles FTC charges regarding misleading endorsements of video games

On the heels of last month's theme, on August 26, 2010, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced a settlement with public relations firm, Reverb Communications, Inc. for what the FTC alleged were deceptive advertising practices. According to the FTC, Reverb had its employees pose as ordinary users and post positive reviews of its clients’ video games on the iTunes store – without disclosing that the reviewers were paid to promote the games.

Following the revisions to the Endorsement and Testimonial Guidelines issued last year, the FTC warned that “Advertisers should not pass themselves off as ordinary consumers touting a product, and endorsers should make it clear when they have financial connections to sellers.”

As a further reminder, this warning also applies to bloggers and other individuals / entities who are disseminating information.
