It's odd how I'm just now getting these emails when I joined this group a long time ago. It is good to know that there are people that live within the bible belt the font live within the bible. My vision isn't clouded and I can see right through bulkshit.

Fortunately, at our meetups, we seem to talk about what are interests ARE, not what they are not, which makes them quite stimulating, energizing, informative, and open to all. I like that!

I may be mistaken, but "freethinker" with regard to religion tends to refer to atheists/agnostic atheists/secularists/nonbelievers.  And in the atheist/etc community there is a broad range of opinions, from unconcern to outright antitheism.  It's not uncommon to see messages along those lines, often following the doctrine "hate the religion, not the religious" -- that it's not the people that are hated, only the religion itself.  I'm not personally inclined to be quite that unabashedly negative, but I do feel that organized dogmatic religion, especially the Abrahamic religions which emphasize the fundamental unworthiness of their followers, do more harm than good to the psyche of the average person.

Just my $0.02 (:

HI

I am new to this meetup.  I’ve been to one event and had good conversation and met interesting people.  But I’m confused and hope someone will help me understand.  I thought this group is a free thinkers group.  Each of us with the right to think, believe, etc as we wish and the freedom to freely express it.  Then I read emails that are aimed specifically at the Christian church and Jews.  I am not a Christian nor Jew.  But I can’t help but wonder why hate messages are being sent.  Is this a free thinkers group or an anti-religion group?

Anyway, I like the idea of a pool party.  But a potluck.  Less work for one person.

Thanks,

Karen

I would LOVE pool party! With some beachball volleyball especially. Jim, on our meetup's homepage, http://www.meetup.com/gastonia-freethinkers/, click under Welcome, freethinkers, on 'Schedule a new meetup", by the +. Looks like Amanda has group set so that any of us can schedule a meetup. When we are not an organizer ourselves, I believe it takes 24 hrs for the announcement to be sent out to all, unless Amanda or an asst organizer notices it and sends out sooner maybe, though it posts on website immediately supposedly. Let's do it!!!Jim, what time of day? Any? I'm flexible currently, though prefer to be in sun after 3 or 4, so I don't have to worry about sunburns any. An evening party could include the after 5 crowd best anyway. Thanks for offering. Let us know what we could do for you, besides bringing our wonderful selves! Yes, potluck is certainly smart idea. Tell us to post on our RSVP's what we would bring. We can also arrange things on the message board, if someone directs us there in a meetup comment especially.Sounds great!!!Wendy

Hey Jim,

Pool party sounds fantastic!  If you make it potluck you won't have to buy any food. :)  If I were you I'd pick a day that's good for you and slap it up there!

Mary (new here)

Hi  Amanda,I hope your health is good.I have been working every weekend (as usual) and can't attend groups as much as I would like to.I have an inground pool and I'm still open to a"meeting/pool party" during the week.Any Mon/Tues/ Wed. would be fine.I just need numbers so I can figure out how much food to buy-It would be a BOB for booze.PS,I don't mind if people bring the kids.Contact me anytime and we can get it started. With respect,Jim K. Ah:

Maybe we should get together to avoid taxes, eat human flesh, drink human blood, express our intolerance for women, and those with incompatible superstitions, then we should demand the government push our choices on everyone else's children, under threat of the local sheriff/truancy officer. We could invent a new "speak only" language, replace hospitals, insulin and antibiotics with incantation therapy, and demand 10% of people's money to line our silk pockets with gold bullion, and hang Galileo in effigy. After that we could raise money to support the oppression of a native people in a foreign country on religious grounds by selling bagels and lox in the cafeteria - tax free!

Sounds fun. when and where?

:)

I'm a generalist which means I know a little about a lot as opposed to a specialist who knows a lot about a little. A generalist learns less & less about more & more until he knows nothing about everything & a specialist learns more& more about less & less until he knows everything about nothing. My idea is to do something that is traditionally associated with churches to show that just because we have varying degrees of disbelief in a spiritual deity we're still good people involved with the welfare of our fellow citizens of the world. I don't think that's just me that feels that way. Secular humanism? A specialist could maybe fill in the specifics. There's also that thing that CAA did with the billboards but that would cost. That's right. I have ideas just not original ones.---------- Original Message ----------From: Amanda Canady <[address removed]>To: [address removed]Subject: [agnostic-145] Open Event SchedulingDate: Mon, 16 Jul[masked]:21:28 -0400

Good morning, everyone.  I hope you all had a great weekend!  As organizer, I have would like to encourage all members to post ideas about new events or schedule new events for the Gastonia Society for Free Thought.

Since I am taking a few weeks off, the schedule will be open.  There are no specific times or rules, except perhaps "Do not charge fees."   If you have an idea but have questions, please feel free to email me.

Best regards,

The Friendly Neighborhood Heretic
