The Gastonia Freethinkers Newsletter

Good morning, everyone. I'll itemize things for brevity:

1.) Disney's Earth is not playing in IMAX from what I can tell. I've checked the theaters that do IMAX and Discovery Place, and all I'm seeing is Aliens vs. Monsters and the usual doc's. The good news is that Star Trek will be in Imax, and we should be able to see it at the Regal Cinema at the Stonecrest Shopping Center. I'll keep you all informed! Since we meet up next to the Gastonia cinema on May 3rd, I'll be rounding up some interested folks to go see Earth after the meeting.

2.) Earth Day Continues! The Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden is having a great event Saturday and Sunday. In addition to the beautiful gardens, there will be interactive workshops, activities for children, and local farmers will be selling their wares. If you're interested in making local food contacts in the Gaston-Lincoln area, this would be a good event to attend. I'm rounding up people to go this Sunday around noon. If you'd like to join us, email me at [address removed] . You can find details about the event here. We'll meet in the lobby at noon. I'll be brandishing a copy of Susan Jacoby's Freethinkers as a secret sign. (Yeah, I know. Dorky.)

3.) Kayaking, anyone? Theresa, John, and I spoke with an employee of a new company, NC Flatwater Outfitters in Belmont, during the Schiele Earth Day event. We'd like to set up a canoe/kayak event. This will be a cheaper alternative to the Whitewater Center. I love the Whitewater Center, and their instructors are top-notch, but their customer service sucks. E.g.: I know people personally in their marketing department, and they STILL don't return my phone calls. If you're interested, email me at [address removed] .

4.) Global Atheist. If you haven't checked out the latest journal of all things atheist. Check it out here. And, yes, they have a twitter feed. Sweeeet! It counteracts Ashton Kutcher's rampant, brain-wasting tweets.

5.) Library Book Sales : It's that time of year! The Gaston Main branch library (across from the Schiele) is having a book sale through tomorrow. If you know about any other books sales, let me know! I'll post them on the boards. Cheap books, good cause!

6.) Future Meetups : I'm going to start discussion threads after each meetup to record all the cool recommendations that have been floating around so we don't forget them! Let's see how well I can play transcriptionist!

7.) Nightlife : As many of you know, I'm a total recluse who doesn't like going out and having a "good time". I don't want my social ineptitude to get in the way of building a successful meetup. So, if there are any cool bands playing, etc., or you'd like to get a group of freethinkers together for drinks, just let me know! I'll post them as events on meetup.

8.) Border's DVD/CD Clearance: I don't know why I'm pointing this out either, but it's nice to know you can get Criterion collection DVD's for 50% off! All marked items are 50% off, about 70% of their inventory. Even some Blu Ray's are on sale.

Thanks for reading, everyone! Have a great weekend!
