We live in an age of misinformation, disinformation, and alternative facts. It is getting harder and harder for us to distinguish truth from lies – non-fiction from fiction. In this presentation, Anne Kruger and Richard Murray delve into the history of mis and disinformation, how to identify truth from lies, and what we can do about it.
Speaker Bio:
Dr Anne Kruger is a leader and pioneer in pre-emptive, evidence-based digital research empowering media organisations to address dis- and misinformation. Anne is currently the Convenor directing the Journalism and Mass Communications programs at the University of Queensland where she leads an AI Community of Practice and AI Working Party. Previously Anne was APAC director for global NGO online verification experts First Draft News for four years.
Anne sits on the governance boards for Australia's first misinformation and disinformation regulatory Code of Practice. She is also an independent member of Australia's national media ethics board.
Anne was an anchor at CNN Hong Kong during SARS, and later a finance reporter at Bloomberg. She previously held senior editorial and presenter positions with ABC Australia including Landline presenter for four years, 7pm news presenter, fill in ABC News Breakfast host and Chief of Staff roles.
Dr Richard Murray is a Senior Lecturer of Digital Journalism at the University of Queensland where he also serves as the Director for Indigenous Engagement. Before this, Richard was the UNESCO Research Fellow in Press Freedom at UQ working with Prof Peter Greste.
Before coming to academia, Richard worked across the Asia-Pacific region as a journalist including a decade working in North Korea and South Korea.
Richard’s research focuses on media law, regional and remote journalism, and mediated constructions of reality through international news.
