9 Year Anniversary of the Get Geeky South Bay Meetup!
This month marks 9 years that the Get Geeky has been running! 9 Years ago I sent out a tweet to local geeks about a new meet up at Red Car Brewery in Torrance. I was floored to have so much interest in this group. You've all been a huge part of helping make this a presence in the South Bay and I'm immensely happy that we've kept this running for so long. I never thought it would last more than a few years at most. If you haven't been in awhile, please stop in and say hi. As always, this meet up is for you. My intent in running this has always been to offer a simple, fun way for smart people in the South Bay to connect and make friends. I'm so happy to see you all each month and to make new connections. Most of all, to have great conversations. Location is a big part of this meet up. I often hear you asking me to have this in new places, and I always listen. In choosing a location, my top priority is to have a place that allows us to talk and to mingle easily. R10 has been a staple for us for many reasons, but mostly for it's great location and ambiance. I refuse to have this in places that are too loud or force us to sit at restaurant-style tables where conversation can be hampered. We're back at R10 this month because it's just the best place for us here in the South Bay (so far!). I'm looking forward to seeing you all and celebrating 9 years! Sincerely, Kelly ------ South Bay Geeks and Creatives, this one’s for you! Come enjoy the company of your own kind! Meet new people! Form alliances that will change the face of…you get the idea. Whether you’re a freelancer or working for The Man, communing with like minded folk is a great idea. Serving the Torrance, San Pedro, Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, El Segundo, and Long Beach areas. (We aren't a clique, if you're outside the South Bay you are still very welcome). The Get Geeky has over 300 members now. We are software engineers, web designers, programmers, writers, toy designers, photographers, and a lot more. And all from the South Bay area. If you are looking to meet smart local people to talk shop, make business connections, or just hang out, then the Get Geeky is your meetup. The Get Geeky was started on February 10, 2009 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/greyfodder/3269130271/in/set-72157613604088328/) (we didn't start using Meetup until much later) and we've been meeting monthly ever since. It was started as a way to replicate the LA Geek Dinner, but for a South Bay crowd. We rotate among the many wonderful bars and restaurants in the South Bay. For 2014 we're looking to add some new events, but we need your help. If you or your business would be interested in sponsoring a Get Geeky event this year, please get in touch with one of our organizers (http://www.meetup.com/getgeekysouthbay/members/?op=leaders). We are looking for locations to handle 20-30 people as well. We hope to see you at the next Get Geeky (http://www.meetup.com/getgeekysouthbay)!
