Hazel Mountain Hike 8 miles 1450 elevation

Details

Caveat: I did this while waiting on an airport runway, so go easy on me! Tough without a computer!

This hike takes us on some beautiful trails in the North section of the Central District of the park In Hazel Country. They are well maintained trails and it is mostly under good tree cover.

The hike begins at the Meadow Spring parking area at mp 33.5. The hike is a lollipop style hike, combining an out and back with a loop.

We will cross the Hazel River multiple times, and while we may be able to rock hop, better to come prepared.

We will start hiking down the Hazel Mountain trail to where in intersects with the Catlett Spur Trail. We will follow along to the Catlett Mountain Trail and continue on until we return back to the Hazel Mountain Trail where we will retrace our steps back to our cars.

There will be an informal afterhike with refreshment near the parking area so feel free to bring a chair, COLD odrink(s) and a refreshment if you'd like to participate.

This hike will be approximately 8 miles, with about 1450 ft. of elevation gain. We will depart at 9:00 so please arrive early enough to get ready to head out by then.

Please do not hike if you’re not feeling well.

DIFFICULTY: Moderately strenuous

WEATHER: If inclement weather necessitates canceling or postponing the hike, the decision will be made no later than 7:00AM - cancellations will be posted on the hike comments section. Steady rain with not much chance of clearing and/or dangerous conditions will call for postponing the hike.

WHAT TO BRING: Please bring plenty of water and wear hiking boots/shoes. Trekking poles are recommended for this hike. Bring snacks/lunch. Also, pay attention to the mountain weather - be prepared with a rain shell. Generally 10 degrees cooler than Charlottesville.

RSVP: If you find that you are NOT going to be able to attend the hike, please update your RSVP to “No” as soon as possible. This allows those on the waitlist to have the opportunity to attend
