Sunset Bike Ride at Shark Valley

Late Afternoon Bike Ride at Shark Valley

When: Sunday, February 17 4:00pm at the park, we will ride at 4:30pm

What: Enjoy all the peace and solitude that Everglades National Park has to offer. and the wildlife starts coming to life. The bike ride is on a 15 mile loop road, paved right through the Everglades. This is the Everglades that we all imagine; vast sawgrass prairies, thick hardwood hammocks, and lots of alligators. At the halfway point is a 60 foot observation tower, where you will experience magnificent vistas and an awe-inspiring sunset. It takes about one and a half hours to ride the entire loop, but we’ll take our time to take a walk on a nature trail, to ascend the tower, and to sit and enjoy the tranquility of the late afternoon in the Everglades. We should be done by about 6:30 pm, and head back toward Miami for a well deserved dinner at the Pit Barbeque.

Where: Everglades Shark Valley Visitors Center

Parking: Must leave your car outside of park. We will be inside after they close the gate.

This 15 mile bike ride is a easy to moderate ride. We will make stops along the the road to take pictures and we will also making a 15 to 20 minute stop at the tower then back to the cars.

Directions: Go south on the Turnpike to the first exit (Tamiami Trail, SW 8 Street), and head west. Continue west on the Tamiami Trail for about 22 miles and you’ll see the sign for Everglades National Park, Shark Valley on the left. You may pay the park inside the if there is room or park outside there is a enterance fee of 10.00 per car or Please park outside the park entrance on the Tamiami Trail and ride your bike in. There is a fee to ride in also. We start at 4:15-4:30 - we should end by 6:30 pm. Park closes at 6:00 pm.

Carpool site to meet: The Winn-Dixie / McDonald's shopping center (Plaza) at State Road 84 and Hiatus Road. From I-95, take I-595 west to Hiatus Road. Make a left and the first right turn into the shopping center. Meet in the parking lot just west of McDonald's. Please be there at 2:15 pm. We will leave at 2:30 sharp! If you are meeting at the carpool site with Jimmy, we will caravan down! (Jimmy knows a short cut!)

Bring: Bicycle You must bring an extra tire tube , and 8 miles is a long walk back!) Also bring a helmet ,but you don't have too if you don't want too , 2 water bottles and bug spray. Don't forget your camera!

Jimmy & Karen, great place to bike, ty for leading. Don't understand how 48 ppl "attended" though, I only saw about 15 biking/hiking. I understand the weather wasn't perfect but it wasn't the top of Mt. Washington either.

My girl and I were there but couldn't find the group. The instructions didn't say exactly where to meetup. I think a couple people still showed up at 4 and just did the ride/hike on their own.

Hey guys just wanted to state that the posted address above is incorrect. The Shark Valley Visitors center is located at:

Note: Travelers east of Shark Valley, allow extra time to travel due to road construction west of Krome Ave.

Directions to Shark Valley Visitor Center
    36000 SW 8th Street. Miami, FL 33194

From Miami, Shark Valley Visitor Center is located on Highway 41 (Tamiami Trail / SW 8th St.) 25 miles west of the Florida Turnpike, exit 25A (from the north) and exit 25 (from the south).

From the Naples area, take U.S. 41 (Tamiami Trail) approximately 70 miles east to Shark Valley.

Going to be a great evening, but definitely dress very warm. Long pants, long sleeves, sweater or fleece, and gloves. The cold front is predicted to head out before we start but it's only supposed to get into the low 60's for a high during the day. It's going to be plenty cold after the sun goes down, and the wind on the back half, especially, can be very strong. Sometimes you can only make half as much speed riding into the wind on the back of the loop even with the same effort as on the front. That said, it can be a leisurely, low speed, casual, ride, if you choose, on almost flat terrain. The Pit is ancient and the BBQ very good.

Will we need to bring flashlights or anything for the ride back?

    February 7, 2013

  • Wendy H.

Isn't that what gears are for? Maybe we should start earlier so those of us who may need to go more slowly (if going against the wind) will have enough time to make it back before nightfall. Unless it's rideable in the dark. Assuming the gators won't be seeking the warmth of the road. On second thought, let's try to make it back before dark.

    February 7, 2013

    • Jimmy

wendy, if we start on time we will be at the midway by 5:30 and will be back to the cars by 6:30-7pm thats a 15-20 min stop

Hi Jimmy: I did this route back in October and at night. I remember the ride back was very windy, making it (extra) challenging. I've heard other friends have the same experience. Is this typical of Shark Valley; specifically for the time of day we're going?
