At 7p.m, Thursday, August 26th at LaunchPad(LaunchPadNola.com),?643 Magazine Street #102,? RubyBayou.com is sponsoring a presentation on Ruby Nuby which hopes to establish a Ruby on Rails technology camp for professionals and at-risk, disadvantage youths in the late summer 2011. ?

Located in NYC, Ruby Nuby is a new member driven organization dedicated to teaching the first year of Ruby Programming, Rails Framework and Related Technologies to professionals who then learn better by teaching at-risk, disadvantaged youths and helping Nubies become professional Rubyists. In NYC, we will have a camp in early summer 2011, where at-risk, disadvantage youths will learn Ruby/Rails and entrepreneurial skills along side professionals. In the evening, the youths will learn life skills and attend cultural events. If the New Orleans community supports it, we will Have a 2nd Ruby Nuby Camp, late summer 2011, where graduates of the first camp in NYC along with Senior Rubyists from around the country will go down to New Orleans to teach the campers there.

RubyConf.org, the largest Ruby conference in the country, is in N.O. this year from Nov 11-13. ?This affords us a wonderful opportunity to recruit the very best talent in the Ruby community back to N.O. to help with our mission. ?

We will discuss how Ruby Nuby and the New Orleans community can help develop the local economy by creating technology jobs, end the cycle of poverty and build the Ruby/Rails community. ?In New Orleans, with support of the local community, we plan to:
  • Create a mobile learning lab to take the learning process to the youths.
  • Distribute donated computers to a subset of the at-risk, disadvantaged youths who, over time, have demonstrated their interest, reliability and ability to code nice with others.
  • Create a mentoring program.
  • Create paid internships.
  • Facilitate the creation of new companies through our Ruby Nuby Startup weekends.
  • Create an exchange of talent, ideas and commerce between the financial hub of NYC and the creative hub of New Orleans. ?

Please join us this evening to discuss this collaboration and to build consensus on how we can do social good while creating jobs in New Orleans.
