    • The Newtown Creek recently made its voyage from New York City to Pompano Beach. The tug boat that brought the future artificial reef vessel from NYC to Pompano Beach is the Kirsten Grace.

This vessel is a large tanker ship that was sold by the City of New York to The Shipwreck Park Foundation at a greatly reduced price. Because it has been a publicly owned ship, it requires far less environmental cleanup prior to sinking, which is typically the largest part of the expenditure in artificial reef projects. A highly experienced team, with a proven track record of sinking ships for artificial reefs, has been working with the foundation to help accomplish this project.

Scheduled for mid-July 2016, the 324-foot ship renamed Lady Luck of the Isle sunk, creating a range of diving experiences from[masked] feet below the surface and about 1.5 miles east of the Pompano Beach Pier in "Ship Wreck Park". The transformed ship became an underwater habitat: a haven for fish, as well as scuba divers. Prominent Pompano Beach artist Dennis MacDonald is creating a mock underwater casino, complete with poker tables, roulette tables and slot machines on the main deck. This underwater casino will be the largest of its kind in the world. It will be a unique underwater experience and provide many diver photo opportunities with a rotating gallery display of locally produced underwater artwork. The ship will join several other ships already deployed in the area creating opportunities for multi-wreck dives at Ship Wreck Park!

This has quickly become one of my favorite wrecks in South Florida. Since Hurricane Irma she has been very fishy! We often see a resident Goliath Grouper, Reef Shark, and a pregnant Bull Shark hanging out. There are also countless barracuda and we often see good sized lionfish as well. Strong currents are pretty common so if you plan to bring any hunting gear please be experienced with wreck diving and using a descent line.

Lauderdale by the Sea has an amazing reef.

The best part about it is that it is about 100 yards from shore so there is no big surface swim.

This dive is all in 12 to 20 feet of water so it is great for beginners

or people who need a bit of confidence building.

You can also swim out further to the drop-off if you'd like, 25' deep.

The flag rental is on the house if you need one.

  • Dive the Okinawa Wreck and a Reef!!!

    Needs a location

    $93.00

The Okinawa is a 107' x 26' 6" Army tug. Displacement loaded is 350 tons. Okinawa was equipped with a 40,000 lb Fairbanks Morse engine. The propeller is 8' in diameter and weighs over 2,000 lbs. The bow points to the south and and is sitting perfectly upright in 69'. The tug rises to 35' at the top of the pilot house. Okinawa was sunk by Shipwreck Park Inc and is the 18th wreck in Shipwreck Park, Pompano Beach. Renowned artist Dennis McDonald created a whimsical dive bar on the wreck called the Midnight Sun. The name was chosen by Finlandia Vodka, the sinking project's largest sponsor. The dive bar includes sea creatures and a magical mermaid holding a "Gazing Globe". As you look into the globe you see your reflection reminding all of us that we need to be the stewards of the ocean. You can penetrate the opening in front of the wheelhouse and swim into the engine room, up and out through the dive bar!

History: LT 1970 was manufactured by Higgins Ind. for the U.S. Army and was completed in October of 1953. LT 1970 was later named Okinawa, after the battle of Okinawa. The picture below shows U.S. Army tug LT-1970 tows USS Cassin Young (DD-793) from Philadelphia to Boston in June 1978 following the destroyer’s loan to the National Park Service as a memorial ship. The move of the vessel was undertaken as an Army Reserve training exercise. The U.S. Army sold the Okinawa in 2003.

  • AQUA ZOO - The Sea Emperor and a Reef!!!

    Needs a location

    $93.00

    https://youtu.be/NugbpGyl8zk

We are doing a 2 tank dive with South Florida Diving Headquarters! (About 3 miles North of GCS) Professional Dive Boat Operator with at least 1 divemaster on board.

The first dive will be the wreck of the Sea Emperor and sits in 70' of water (the top of the barge is about 60' deep) and is referred to as the "AQUAZOO" because of the abundance of marine life typically seen there including stingrays, moray eels, Goliath grouper, Nurse sharks, etc...
If not much current is present you could possibly swim to the United Caribbean wreck following an easy trail of boulders that are also home to a lot of critters. One day there wasn't much to see on the Sea Emperor (very unusual), so I followed the boulders Southeast towards the United Caribbean and came across 3 dive buddies swimming together - a big southern stingray with a cobia swimming above it and the largest turtle I ever saw.

The second dive will be a reef.

All of our boat trips guarantee you a dive buddy!

  • Dive the Lost Ledge and Another Reef!!!

    Needs a location

    $93.00

    Dive the Lost Ledge !!!

Type: Drift dive on a reef
    Depth range: 45 - 60 ft

Suggested Skill Level: Open Water Diver or equivalent experience

    Location: Pompano Beach (outer reef)

Description: Lost ledge is a section of the outer reef running parallel to the shoreline just south of Hillsboro Inlet. This reef has a series of east, west facing ledges with rock mounds thrown in for confusion. A very extensive reef area. Can be navigationally challenging (hence the name); however, wherever you are on the reef you will be happy. A favorite reef of lobster divers, especially on rough days.

Navigation: For a north current you can pretty much start anywhere towards the south end. For a south current the best spot to start is the north hook. The outer reef is very wide here so there is an advantage to using a zig zag pattern along with the current.

The second dive will be a shallow reef.
