New Name, New Look, Same Purpose

Hello members;

Ever since I assumed responsibility for maintaining this group I have sought to establish a unique identity and style. To achieve that I have finally settled on a new name for this group, GrassrootsCamp, and a slightly updated look for our Meetup page, as well as registering a domain,, so that in the future the group can add features not available through Meetup.

So why did I choose to call it a "camp"? I believe that the camp name reflects several things that I think are important about this group. First, it evokes a sense of community, learning and fun, all of which are things that I hope this group will offer. Second, it draws from the technology community "barcamp" language that refers to self-organized conferences (aka unconferences) where participants define the agenda, and everyone participates in a collaborative learning process. Finally, it just so happens that the domain name was available.

Just to be clear, for those of you who may not like "barcamp" events, our meetup format will remain largely the same as it has been in the past: this will not be a group that has the "barcamp" format on a regular basis. We may do one or two larger events during the year, but the standard meetups will be in the presentation and discussion format.

As for the changed look and logo, I've just made a few changes and threw together a logo that I thought would bring the theme together a bit.

I will be putting together another networking event for next week and look forward to getting feedback from everyone about the changes. If you are interested in helping to organize this group, we have a spot open for an assistant organizer. If you are a graphic designer and you are deeply bothered by my lack of photoshop skills, please let me know if you're interested in helping design a better logo or website. And if you are a technology professional who is interested in presenting on a topic, please let me know as I start planning our fall schedule for meetups.
